Assistant Finance Manager
Systems Biology Duties And Responsibilities: Reporting to the Director of Administration and Finance and working collaboratively with a team of grants managers and accounts payable staff, leads the day-to-day fiscal efforts of finance team in the department. The primary responsibility for this position is the ownership and management of multiple complex sponsored research accounts that require accurate and sophisticated interpretation of guidelines. Through complex reporting, analysis, forecasting, budget development, and compliance monitoring, provides information for and advises on high level decision making to senior leadership team of the department. Supervises grants managers and coordinates the management of their account portfolio, including budget development, reconciliation, compliance, variance analysis, financial processing and monitoring of budgets. Identifies policies, processes and procedures needing refinement and/or enhancement and makes recommendations for changes to senior management. Provides training to grants managers. Works closely with the faculty members in the department to provide financial information on their portfolios, guidance on grant submissions and fiscal management of their awards. Makes recommendations to faculty members and postdocs in procuring funding. Oversees effort reporting. May take on special projects or other duties as needed. Basic Qualifications: Basic Qualifications: BA required. Must have a background in accounting and finance and 5-7 years of related experience. Additional Qualifications: Master's degree in accounting, finance, or business preferred. Previous experience in an academic, non-profit, or research environment.; sponsored accounting strongly preferred; collaborative approach to work and ability to supervise, lead, and motivate staff. Experience working with grant funds. Experience supervising staff. Demonstrated ability to work with confidential and privileged information required. Proven track record of success in managing a range of financial activities. Demonstrated ability to negotiate and balance multiple priorities. Strong attention to detail The successful candidate will also possess good interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Excellent Microsoft Excel skills required. Proficiency with MS Office applications is required and familiarity with Harvard Financial systems is strongly preferred. Makes effective hiring decisions, sets expectations, and clarifies roles and responsibilities of direct and indirect reports. Provides regular and timely guidance and performance feedback to direct and indirect reports. Effectively communicates and transmits relevant information to staff. Regularly aligns the evolving needs and goals of the organization with the evolving abilities and goals of staff. Plans and supports the development of individuals' skills and abilities. Effectively identifies and actively works to resolve conflicts between individuals and groups, engaging all resources available within HMS and across Harvard.
