Academic Facilities Manager

Stony Brook University’s newly formed Teaching, Learning + Technology (TLT) department is seeking an Academic Facilities Manager (AFM). Stony Brook University is a major research university located on Long Island, approximately 60 miles East of New York City. TLT provides a comprehensive one-stop-shopping approach to supporting faculty and student teaching and learning. The Academic Facilities Manager (AFM) position is being created to complement our existing expertise and responsibilities in faculty development, instructional and audio-visual technology, student computing, media services, and TV and video production. The AFM will drive adoption of, and support for, good teaching through facility design and faculty education. In addition, this position coordinates and participates in efforts to create and maintain functional, clean, safe, accessible learning environments that meet the needs of the faculty and students. Required: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in management, administration, engineering, architecture or related field. A minimum of five years of full-time progressively responsible experience in classroom or facilities management. Evidence of team leadership, staff supervision and capable of motivating others. Ability to manage and coordinate multiple tasks and projects. Committed to working with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff. Independent self- motivated person who is customer service driven and committed to improving the quality of services s/he provides. Ability to work well with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record that is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Applicants must submit their operator's license number on their application form for a motor vehicle check.  Preferred: Master’s degree, preferably in management, administration, engineering, architecture or related field. Capable of producing conceptual designs of classrooms, computer labs and informal learning spaces (student study areas, etc.) to support modern approaches to teaching, learning and working with facilities to convert these designs into blueprints. Knowledge of appropriate furniture and technology for classrooms, computer labs and study areas. An understanding of the effects of color and lighting within facilities and their effect on student learning. Prior experience working in a University setting or a similarly large and diverse organization. Experience coordinating contracted services and implementing a continuous quality improvement management approach. Basic knowledge of HVAC, power, access control and security systems. Basic fire, disability access, environmental health and safety codes as they relate to classrooms. Some experience with facility scheduling systems, usage analysis, and project management software. Excellent communication and computing skills, especially in database and website maintenance. Some budget management experience. Ability to manage and coordinate multiple tasks and projects.
