Responsibilities:

Reports to the Director of Operations.

Develops cost-effective packaging for manufactured products and related supplies.

Performs product and packaging tests including fragility, drop, vibration, Mullen and carton compression.

Develops and implements reliable, low costs, sustainable, protective product packaging.

Prepares schedules, test reports, cost estimates etc.

Assures packaging designs comply with company and international standards and regulations.

Works with numerous Company groups including: Development, Product Engineering, Procurement, Planning, Marketing, Supply Chain, etc.

Frequently interfaces with our manufacturing locations on new packing introductions.  Understands our suppliers’ capabilities, costs, and lead times and works with them to reduce costs and improve quality.

Researches and integrates new methods, materials, and technologies into package design or redesign.

Utilizes available software tools including IDEAS, Matrix, Excel, Word, TOPS, etc.

Trouble shoots and resolves packaging related quality problems with suppliers, manufacturing partners, and distribution.

Manage external suppliers and vendors in the development of new packaging and products to include vendor selection, cost negotiation, timing and budgeting.

Manage the technical and engineering aspects for the commercialization of new packaging as it relates to new products, alternative materials, product restages, and cost reduction initiatives.

Develop and design packaging that uses the best combination of existing components and materials.

Generate new concept ideas and solve problems to fulfill business needs.

Deliver packaging that offers new functional features, reduction in product costs, and incorporation of new styling concepts.

Maintain technical competence in a wide variety of materials, processes and design aspects applicable to the company products.

Manage multiple projects at the same time to include: planning, timelines, capital expenditures, technology transfer, achievement of cost targets, and delivery of design/information from external suppliers/vendors.

Evaluate competitive packaging and/or products.

Requirements:

Minimum of 3 plus years experience in packaging development and management within a manufacturing environment.

Experience with packaging materials and machinery.

Most design work will require practical knowledge of packaging materials; experience across a broad spectrum of different packaging materials/methods will be beneficial.

Experience and knowledge in the capital budgeting process is preferred.

Good written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to manage multiple projects and change priorities on a daily basis.

Some travel required.

Strong analytical and math skills.

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Equivalent (Preference for Package or Mechanical Engineering degree).
