Utility Project Engineer

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

 

This individual will be responsible for managing the design and engineering of utility solar photovoltaic projects.  The utility project engineer (UPE) will provide project management and design consultation for utility scale projects on a daily basis, and will be responsible for all technical aspects of the job.  The UPE will be the technical expert for electrical, structural, civil, and other fields of design aspects to ensure engineering integrity, as well as successful approval processes with associated stakeholders. The UPE is also responsible for maintaining a project schedule and successful execution of the project, meeting all necessary milestones for each project. The UPE will report directly to the Director of Engineering and provide regular updates and reports as assigned.  Expected travel is 25%.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

This individual is responsible for the following tasks:Attend site qualification visits to collect information required to complete the design and permitting of large-scale solar electric systems. Oversee the development of all designs for utility solar electric systems that meet all national, state and local code requirements as well as customer defined requirements.Obtain design approvals from professionally licensed engineering sub-contractors.Manage drafters to create professional design drawings showing the structural, electrical and site plan design of large scale solar electric systems.Manage the submission of drawings to the appropriate agency in order to obtain the necessary permits to allow for construction of large-scale solar electric systems.Coordinate the development of a bill of material for each project based on the final approved design.Provide technical input to support the interconnection application and utility approval process.Perform team management activities such as employee reviews, interviewing potential candidates, and adding resources to further develop the department. Integrate new processes and methods to increase productivity and efficiency of the department.Serve as the technical expert for engineering team and final design decisions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

SunEdison is seeking an individual with the following skills and experience.  On the job training will be provided for any person who qualifies for this position but does not meet all of the following requirements. 

 A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering degree is preferred.Experience working in an engineering capacity for a commercial photovoltaic company, or designing commercial distributed generation systems, commercial electrical systems or utility substations.  Knowledgeable in standard applied codes such as the NEC and UBC.Strong knowledge of photovoltaic system design and optimizing system components for energy production. Strong knowledge of electrical and structural design components and manufacturers.Use of energy modeling systems for photovoltaic applications and the variables/constraints related to energy production.Good working knowledge of standard utility process for interconnection approval and design requirements.Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD drafting software or equivalent. Strong organizational and skills to manage the activities of drafters and Junior PEs and maintaining project schedules.Good working knowledge of MS Office programs, specifically Word and Excel.Experience designing with medium voltage equipment would be a valuable asset for this position.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Regular use of the telephone and e-mail for communication is essential. Sitting for extended periods is common.  Hearing and vision within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect documents. No heavy lifting is expected.  Exertion of up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally may be required.  Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computer terminals, calculator, copiers, and FAX machines. Good reasoning ability is required to solve a wide range of business problems. 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

The job is performed indoors in a traditional office setting.
