ELECTRICAL ESTIMATOR: PUBLIC WORKS SECTION CHIEF
This is a rare position for a serious estimator with deep experience in estimating large bid specifications public works electrical systems for an at-risk, self performing integrated electrical construction company.
Rare is defined on two levels. A successful person in the position can make a quarter million dollars or more annually. It will be a continued education for even the most savvy and skilled estimator.
THE JOB:
Lead a team in public works projects electrical construction estimating. This can be anything from a large hospital, to a datacenter, military base or stadium. Typically these jobs are five to fifty million electrical dollars.
You should be able to write this list of duties and responsibilities if you are a fit for this position, but there are categories of responsibility we will outline for you:ASSESSMENT: Looking at the assets of the company, the timing, the client, the contractors at the table and the company performance history in this sector, do we allocate assets to estimate this job?PLANS SURVEY: What is this job worth? What is the completeness and quality of the plans? What are the risks and opportunities inherent in what is and is not in those plans, and what is and is not correct (error and omission assessment)?TAKE OFF: The time honored process of leading while working with a team in establishing the count and allocation of labor. The count includes everything from site work and rental, to issues of density, elevation and declining productivity.VALUE ENGINEERING: How should this job get built ultimately? How will the job be built? What are the chances that alternatives that enhance our position can be sold on this job?RISK ANALYSIS: How does all we know fit together, and what is likely to happen on the job? What do we think we can control and what are the odds?FORMULATION OF THE NUMBER: All things considered, the count, the schedule, the competition, track record with owners and general contractors, and with consideration for the other details estimate, what is the number that we proceed with?POLITICAL EFFORTS: Can sales and relationships alter the outcome?
The spectrum of duties and considerations above is the real job for an executive estimator. Part of it is evaluation, part of it is plain old production work, part of it is engineering, and part of it is the application of broad general business acumen. This is not the mindset of a pure production estimator; this is the broader responsibilities of leadership.
Additional responsibilities are mentoring, management and leadership responsibilities. Your job is to bring up the acumen of the underlings. Finally, you need to run a tight and clean ship. The system must be kept up to date, assemblies and templates properly assembled and entered, and files must be free of illegible scribble and sticky notes. We are looking for solid conventions, a systematic approach, consistency, and the ability for any person to look back and see all that was done clearly.
THE COMPANY:
We are in the top tier of the Nation’s self-performing electrical constructors. The culture is a culture of relentless productivity and systems refinement. It is the culture that works in the service business world where we are judged by success of project after project by quality, and conformance with schedule and budget. Inside, and for the benefit of EVERYBODY here, and that will include you if you should join, the measure we are looking at is profit.
For all that was said about productivity and systems refinement, we have a remarkable stability in our executive ranks. Our leadership has stayed with us, many from the very beginning. The newer leaders are following suit.
Estimating leadership here probably performs fifty hours of real work a week, but are not here Saturday and Sunday. We have a culture that is one of the very few that recognizes the contribution of estimation, and our chief estimators are in the top 2% of the paychecks issued companywide. If you are smart and engineer ways to make money for us, your will be aggressively rewarded, and will receive every bit the consideration that great field managers and project managers receive.
We are a successful company. We make money, we share profits, we pay the vendors, we can bond anything and we are considered a quality provider by the big generals. We are looking to refine and improve always.
If you join you will join a unique team. You will be working for our VP of Estimating upon whose intellect and back this company had its meteoric rise. As a mentor, technician, strategist and business person, he is without peer and there will always be something to learn from him. It has been a profitable privilege to employ this man, and you will be the benefactor of exceptional leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS:
10 year of continuous immersion in self-performing electrical construction (contracting) as an estimator with deep experience evaluating and estimating substantial public works electrical constructions.
EDUCATION:
There is no specific requirement.
COMPENSATION:
$150 – 300K. This is a senior working estimating management position, and reasonable discussion will attend genuine candidates. The 401K is capless and contributes 33%. Good Blue Cross medical and dental 100% for employee.
MANAGEMENT OF CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION:
We use a consultant to screen which allows for the real possibility that one of our own (misguided soul) may apply and we wish to allow for that possibility with impunity. No information whatsoever will be moved without your expressed consent.
