Web Developer/Technical Support
Princeton University's McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning seeks an experienced and highly motivated web developer- departmental computing support specialist to join McGraw Teaching and Learning Center group. This position is a three- year term. He/She will provide comprehensive design, development and technical support services across multiple platforms for McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning website. McGraw Teaching and Learning Center is highly collaborative, and has close working relationships between student, faculty and staff across Princeton University and service stakeholders.
This position is responsible for all aspects of development, design and technical support, including requirements definition, development, testing and deployment, maintenance and upkeep, using a combination of coding and productivity tools. He/She will also be responsible for areas of technology including troubleshooting, upgrading, configuration including laptops, desktops, mobile devices, printers, and other hardware. This position also requires software support and troubleshooting of all computing resources used by the staff.
These responsibilities require a strong mix of personal and technical skills as well as experience with creative presentation of dynamic content in a news-driven environment.
The incumbent is required to attend monthly SCAD meetings, and applicable training. Success in McGraw Center requires a strong commitment to teamwork, a desire to keep abreast of new web technologies, software and hardware technologies, and the ability to be proactively engaged in the goals of the McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Maintaining, in line with University standards, Princeton.edu/engineering, which is based in the University's Roxen content management system; working the University Office of Information Technology regarding servers, upgrades and other technical issues
- Working as both designer and front-end developer to implement dynamic, interactive ways of presenting news and information in support of the Center's strategic goals. Working with departmental colleagues to assess common needs and facilitating Center-wide solutions for the web and other modes of electronic communication;
- Creating new sites for subsidiary programs, as well as smaller event-specific sites for conferences or media campaigns
- Managing and coordinating periodic reviews of web content to ensure currency; responding to questions and concerns from web users about the site content and features
- Managing the design and technical aspects of the video displays within the Center and any other electronic/multimedia information sources
- Helping with final production of videos and executing their launch on the web
Essential Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a proven ability to manage long-range projects while also maintaining the daily technical needs of a department and program. Experience in system administration, maintenance, and support of Microsoft Windows (XP, Vista, and 7), Mac OSX (10.4 to 10.6) and Linux operating systems in an Active Directory domain. Have working knowledge in remote administration tools such as Dameware Mini Remote Control, Apple Remote Desktop, and others. Worked with full drive encryption software such as McAfee Endpoint Encryption. The candidate must have the ability to install, configure, and troubleshoot a variety of desktops (PC and Mac), networked hardware (printers and copiers), applications (Office, and etc.) and information access tools. Must have knowledge in LAMP administration (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). Database administration will be required to design and maintain MySQL and other relational databases (Access). He/she must be able to design, maintain, expand, and administrate websites using Roxen and LAMP.
Required skills:
Excellent overall communications skills and a demonstrated talent for working as part of a team and interacting with a wide range of people such as faculty, staff and students of Princeton University.
3-6 years experience in web development and programming. Specifically, he or she should have demonstrated expertise with html, xhtml, xml, css and Adobe Flash, and should be familiar with a portion of each of the following areas:
PHP, JavaScript, Java and content management systems such as Drupal, Joomla, WordPress and MovableType
- CGI languages: Perl, PHP, Python
- Scripting: JavaScript, VBScript
- Programming Languages: Java, C, .Net
- Web environments: ASP, ColdFusion
Experience and facility with Flash Video is highly desirable.
Experience with MySQL is a plus.
Experience with Princeton-specific systems also is a plus.
Proficient with Mac, PC and some Linux environments.
