Job Title Web Developer/Designer

Position Summary The School of Engineering and Applied Science is carrying out a major program of growth and fundraising with an emphasis on solving problems of energy, environment, health and security. As each of these areas progresses, the web developer/designer will play a key role within the engineering communications team, helping tell the story of the engineering school and its people through creative use of the web and digital technologies.



The web developer/designer manages the engineering school website and serves as the lead front-end developer of new web features and websites for the school. He or she works with experienced journalists who make up the communications team, including the senior new media editor, to maximize the online presence of Princeton Engineering and develop creative ways to meet the school's communications goals.



These responsibilities require a strong mix of personal and technical skills as well as experience with creative presentation of dynamic content in a news-driven environment.



Specific responsibilities include:

- Maintaining, in line with University standards, Princeton.edu/engineering, which is based in the University's Roxen content management system; working the University Office of Information Technology regarding servers, upgrades and other technical issues

- Working as both designer and front-end developer to implement dynamic, interactive ways of presenting news and information in support of the school's strategic goals. Working with departmental colleagues to assess common needs and facilitating school-wide solutions for the web and other modes of electronic communication;

- Creating new sites for subsidiary programs and related research centers, as well as smaller event-specific sites for conferences or media campaigns

- Managing and coordinating periodic reviews of web content to ensure currency; responding to questions and concerns from web users about the site content and features

- Managing the design and technical aspects of the video displays within the building and any other electronic/multimedia information sources

- Helping with final production (adding branding, optimizing compression) of videos and executing their launch on the web

Essential Qualifications Required skills:



Excellent overall communications skills and a demonstrated talent for working as part of a team and interacting with a wide range of people



Demonstrated experience with creative presentation of dynamic web content in a news-driven environment.



3-6 years experience in web development and programming. Specifically, he or she should have demonstrated expertise with html, xhtml, xml, css and Adobe Flash, and should be familiar with a portion of each of the following areas:



PHP, JavaScript, Java and content management systems such as Drupal, Joomla, WordPress and MovableType



Demonstrated understanding of balancing new Web technologies with accessibility, including issues concerning users with disabilities and in developing countries.



Experience and facility with Flash Video is highly desirable.



Experience with MySQL is a plus.



Experience with Princeton-specific systems also is a plus.



Comfort with Mac and PC environments.
