TheSoftware Engineering Manager plays a crucial role in the development ofBerkleemusic.com and other Berklee Media web properties.  As a seasoned software engineer andarchitect, s/he helps the marketing team to define their software requirements,ensures that projects are built the right way, and participates in the actualday-to-day development of the public-facing web site, spanning studentcommunity, merchandising and live events. As the manager of a small team of expert programmers in a fun andfast-paced environment, the Software Engineering Manager provides mentoring anddevelopment opportunities to the team, and works with the Chief MarketingOfficer to project manage, prioritize and divide software development workloadamong team members.  Projects range fromlarge-scale social application development to the pursuit of perfection in end-userexperience.  The Software EngineeringManager works in a diverse integrated environment of best-of-breed open sourcetechnology, including Linux, PostgreSQL, Ruby on Rails, OpenACS and ObjectOriented PHP, and along with his/her team, defines and adheres to bestpractices to enable maximum business logic flexibility, robustness and codereuse. 

 

Qualifications:

At least5 years experience in developing web applications using open source tools.  A BS in information technology, computerscience or a related field.  Expertisewith UNIX shells and editors, version control (CVS and Subversion), server-sidelanguages (Perl, PHP, Tcl, Ruby), relational databases (PostgreSQL), andhosting configurations (Apache, AOLServer, Mongrel).  Verystrong data modeling and query skills. Extensive experience architecting and implementing object-orientedsoftware, as well as large-scale non-OO applications.  Ability to combine a deep understanding ofbusiness needs and engineering best practices. Superior verbal and written communication, negotiation and interpersonalskills.  Ability to maintain high levelsof creativity and quality. Strong organizational skills and the ability to meetdeadlines, prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously with greatefficiency and attention to detail. Familiarity with today’s music styles, leading musical figures and thebasic structure and organization of the music products and online musicindustry.  Ability to handle confidentialmatters with integrity and complete

confidentiality.
