Senior Software Engineer - Grid Computing in Biomedical Informatics Domain

Overview

The Software Research Institute (SRI), in collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Informatics (BMI) at The Ohio State University, is searching for a Senior Software Engineer to collaborate with high-value scientific projects seeking to build applications and extensions using software developed by the Institute.

SRI and BMI have a central role in leading software development for multidisciplinary research initiatives within the biomedical research community. They lead development of the core middleware, caGrid, that is used by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to create the cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG™), a national program with the goal of enabling collaborative cancer research. The caGrid project has won a number of awards and received acclaim within the research community. In January 2008, Frontier Magazine featured Dr. Joel Saltz and the research team’s work on caGrid.

Other high-impact softwaredevelopment led by SRI includes the newly-awarded Clinical and TranslationalScience Awards (CTSA) initiative. The CardioVascular Research Grid (CVRG), for which OSU leads grid development, has adopted and is extending the caGrid middleware for collaborative cardiovascular research.

Position Description

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be expected to have expert-level knowledge of in-house software, particularly our flagship caGrid software. You will work with collaborators to identify their requirements, leverage our software, and document best practices and reusable application architecture and design patterns. Requirements:

·Bachelor’s degree in a Computer Science or related field (Computer Engineering, etc.)

·4+ years of rigorous software engineering experience, including having demonstrated the ability to develop significant new production-quality software

·Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to translate technical issues and problems to a non-technical audience

·The motivation and initiative to break down barriers to success

·Commitment to producing high-quality software for a large user community

Required skills include:

·Strong grasp of object-oriented principles

·4+ years of Java development experience

·Significant experience with distributed systems (e.g., SOA and web services)

·Knowledge of XML

·Familiarity with relational database development, including object-relational mapping and XML schema binding technologies

·Intermediate level knowledge of Linux

·Intermediate level networking knowledge (firewall issues, TCP/IP networking, etc.)

Preferred skills include:

·Experience gathering requirements

·Experience delivering software solutions and architecture specifications for customers

·Experience developing new features that meet customer requirements

·Experience documenting best practices and application designs to contribute knowledge back to the larger user community

·Familiarity with Grid Computing

·Experience working with large software infrastructures
