Akamai - Powering a Better Internet. About the Team The Site Acceleration engineering group is responsible for the core HTTP delivery services at Akamai. This includes the HTTP surrogate server, Akamai's EdgeComputing offering, the OS, kernel and monitoring applications. The team is comprised of first class engineers who specialize in low level systems programming and high availabilty services. About the Job We are looking for a Senior Manager for Akamai's core Site Acceleration services. This position will be responsible for a number of the SA Engineering's engineering teams including the teams developing and maintaining the proxy / delegate server that handles most all of Akamai's traffic. These teams are generally inward facing, but as a service company which prides itself on its customer focus, they are often pulled into debug field issues affecting customers. The developemnt teams that this position will lead are fairly evenly split between maintenance, feature development and performace optimization. Responsibilities The individual hired for this position will be responsible for three to four small engineering teams, which concentrate on Akamai's proxy server. They will have managers as well as a few individual contributors reporting to them. They will be responsible for the overall quality of design, implementation and unit testing of these teams. Additionally they will be responsible for seeing software deployed to the network on a regular basis keeping to a well defined development schedule. Basic Qualifications * Education: Master's Degree in Computer Science or similar field * Overall Experience: 7-10 years or equivalent experience * 2+ years experience as a second-line manager with an engineering team of 20-30 engineers and 3-5 managers. Responsible for all management duties including hiring, individual evaluation, disciplinary action, technical project management and team development. * Experience developing other engineering manager and working on their performance and the performance of their teams. * Excellent knowledge of the HTTP protocol. * First rate knowledge of both C and C++ * Professional experience using OpenSSL * Skilled with TCP/IP networking, multithreading and server development. * Development experience on Linux or other Unix flavor is required * Excellent written and verbal communications skills * Experience with the GNU GCC compiler family * Working knowledge of Perl and shell scripting * The ideal candidate is goal-oriented, able to work on long-term projects without losing focus, and highly organized.
