Senior Systems Engineer

 

 

Position Summary

The person filling this position will be responsible for maintaining and supporting our development servers and 24x7 time-critical production architecture, which run under RedHat and CentOS Linux operating systems. The candidate should specialize in Linux, with proven experience with HP DL series hardware architectures, and should also have mid-level experience administering and supporting Cisco/Juniper LAN/WAN architectures.

 

Principal DutiesArchitecture, Engineering, Implementation, and Administration of CentOS and RedHat linux-based servers and related softwareTune and optimize kernel, memory, network and I/O performanceWork closely with teams of developers and scientists to make appropriate infrastructure recommendations based on applications needsDesign and provide regular reports on system performance and storage utilizationBuild and maintain appropriate software tools to meet business objectivesProvide top-level Linux support for all technology groups in the companyParticipate in off-hour on-call rotating support schedules for production systems – must be willing to carry phone and email device 24x7 to handle emergenciesOversee new and existing systems design and implementation projectsParticipate in R&D projects to explore new technologies Explore, create, and maintain close relationships with manufacturers and vendorsDetect, diagnose, and resolve problems with circuits and routers. Work with network infrastructure vendors to resolve problems.Assist new customers to implement WAN circuit & VPN connections for on-site applications.Support offsite disaster recovery efforts by participating in routine disaster recovery testsEnsure data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operationsSupport media management through internal methods and procedures or through offsite storage and retrieval servicesConducts routine hardware and software audits of servers/workstations for compliance with established standards, policies, procedures and configuration guidelinesOther duties as assigned

 

The Senior Systems Engineer must be able to work on complex problems with minimum to no supervision. He/she must be able to follow defined procedures and practices, using approved tools to produce desired results. 

 

Qualification/Requirements

Requires a BS in computer science or equivalent job experience.

 

Minimum five years experience in an architect/engineer/support capacity for critical Linux environments.

 

One or more of the following certifications is REQUIRED: RHCE, CLE (NCLE), LPIC (LPIC-2 minimum, LPIC-3 preferred).  

One or more of the following certifications is REQUIRED: HP Accredited Systems Engineer (ASE), HP Master Accredited Systems Engineer (MASE, SAN Architect preferred).

One or more of the following certifications is REQUIRED: Cisco Certified Network Associate: CCNA

 

ESX 3.5, VMware Server experience a plus.

NetAPP, Network Application SAN solution a plus.

 

Excellent oral and written communications and documentation skills are required, as is the ability to function as an integral part of a top-notch engineering team.
