RECRUITMENT FOR: Data Base Specialist I (Contractual)
STARTING SALARY: $20.70 an hour

POSITION LOCATION: Annapolis, Maryland
NATURE OF WORK: This position is the full performance level of work designing, developing, testing, implementing, maintaining and controlling data base management systems for multipurpose, multi-tasking computers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Defines data bases including defining user requirements, developing data definitions and maintaining the data dictionary;
Develops logical and physical data base designs and ensures appropriate modifications to the design models;
Establishes initializing procedures and data element naming conventions;
Coordinates the installation and implementation of data base management system software and related software tools with vendors, other data processing staff and system users;
Maintains security and integrity of data by specifying access policies, standards, methods and parameters, by developing standards for applications programs, by establishing recovery plans to minimize data loss and system downtime and by performing back up routines for the data base management system software and for the stored data;
Monitors data base performance and makes modifications and adjustments to data base architecture, storage methods and management system software to fine tune the data base for optimum response time;
Monitors capacity and allocates space according to overall needs of systems users, available data storage and data base management system requirements;
Trains programmers and systems users on techniques for efficient use of data base management systems;
Troubleshoots problems related to availability of data to systems users, space, data base software, data flow, data storage or data access;
Coordinates the data base management system interfaces with other data processing units;
Evaluates technical data processing information and makes recommendations to management regarding procedures, software and hardware for managing data bases;
Prepares long and short range plans for feasibility of conversion to data base management systems from existing file structures;
Reviews technical literature and attends workshops, seminars and training classes to keep abreast of the latest developments in data base management systems and related data processing technology;
Performs other related duties.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in
Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science or other information technology-related field to include course work in data base management systems.
Experience: None.
Note: 1. Thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university in
Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science or other information technology-related field to include course work in data base management systems may be substituted for the required education.
2. One year of experience designing, developing, testing,
implementing and maintaining applications systems and programs using third generation or other generally accepted computer programming languages or maintaining and modifying operating systems for multipurpose, multi-tasking computers may be substituted for the required education
3. Experience operating multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems;
or scheduling, controlling input and output or maintaining a tape library to process data on multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems; or converting data from project specifications by developing program code using third generation or other generally accepted computer programming languages may be substituted for high school on a year-for-year basis.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of Database Management Systems is required,
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is preferred. Additional knowledge of .NET, T-SQL or other programming languages is preferred

Qualifications: You must possess the minimum and selective qualifications before you may be selected for a contractual position.

Credit is given for relevant part-time, temporary or volunteer experience based on the number of hours worked per week. You must include on your application the time you spent in such activity.
