Responsibilities/Duties
Elster is seeking a knowledgeable Software Engineer/Developer with core competencies around C++ development. The position is focused on new feature development, not maintenance. One must be able to work independently due to a fast-paced work environment. Software engineer to help accelerate the development of features on the EA roadmap.Candidate will be responsible for developing components of Elster's Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) software. Specific responsibilities will include: Provide estimates of development effort and risk to Product Management for new features based on requirements analysisDesign and implement new functionality to meet requirementsDevelop new software solutions focusing on scalability and ease of deploymentDevelop in-house meter simulation software tools for performance and load testingFocus on performance and high availability of the data collection systemWork within the development team to share responsibility for the product architectureDocument design decisions and participate in design reviewsBecome an in-house expert on Elster's 2-way AMI metering and home automation productsSupport and enhance core legacy C++ softwareLead design decision-making and architectural definition tasksHelp the team resolve level 3 customer support issuesSupport Software Quality Assurance by reviewing test plansRecommend improvements to the software development and release processTake ownership of complex business-critical portions of the software system
QualificationsMust have a Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fieldMinimum of 5 years software development experience using Object Oriented methodologyPrior experience designing scalable solutionsPrior experience with C++ software developmentExperience designing, implementing, and debugging multithreaded server applications in C++ on Windows Server platformsPrior experience with XML and related technologiesPrior experience writing software using relational databasesPrior experience with distributed systemsWorking knowledge of Windows operating systemExcellent communication skillsAbility to learn quicklyExcellent problem solving skillsAbility to work independently when appropriate as well as work in a close team environmentExperience with Microsoft Visual C++ developmentExperience using Oracle 11gExperience with Python, Perl, or another scripting languageExperience deploying software on Windows Server systemsExperience developing data collection systemsKnowledge of metering or automated meter readingExperience using Rational ClearCase and Rational ClearQuestExperience writing 64-bit Windows applications and/or porting 32-bit software to 64-bit environmentsWorking knowledge of XML-RPC, SOAP, or other web service technologies
