Technical Writer III

I. Position Summary:

 

To work independently or with a team to research available information, design and write document plans, and producing and maintaining high quality, accurate documentation.

 

This position may require interaction with business and technical teams across SG geographic boundaries that may require some travel. It also requires interaction with project managers, software engineers, business analysts, and testing teams.

 

II.   Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

 

1.  Write various technical documents including but is not limited to requirements, specifications, training material, and user documentation.

2.  Write clear, understandable documents that follow the writing standards and processes defined by the Technical Documentation and Training department.

 

3.  Revise and maintain documentation as tasked.

 

4.  Attend staff meetings and/or other meetings as required to keep abreast of ongoing or anticipated projects, and to report on current status of assigned documentation.

 

5.  Interview the appropriate software engineers, support staff, and quality assurance personnel to understand functionality and to determine the documentation needs throughout the project lifecycle.

 

6.  Participate as project lead if requested and provide regular interaction with other project leads on work assignments and schedules.

 

7.  Schedule workload and time accordingly.

 

8.  Interact with relevant internal and external clients for technical information.

 

9.  Leverage basic understanding of software development lifecycle to support development of various technical documents that includes but is not limited to requirements, specifications, test plans, and user manuals.

 

10.  Understand validation concepts in order to produce and maintain high quality, accurate documentation.

 

11.  Create and edit graphics using graphic enhancement software.

 

12.  Promote the exchange of information between the Technical Documentation and Training department and other departments and business units in SGI.

 

13.  Assist in defining techniques and processes to improve the quality of documentation.

 

14.  Assist the training group with developing training material.

 

15.  Assist Technical Writer I and II in troubleshooting and problem solving.

 

16.  Adhere to customer requirements including customer business terminology distinctions.

 

17.  Perform other tasks as assigned.

 

III.   Position Requirements:

 

1.  College degree plus 4 years of technical writing experience or at least 5 years of technical writing experience required. Must have writing experience using various desktop publishing applications (such as FrameMaker and Word) within a software development environment and having produced various types of documents such as user guides, quick reference cards, reference manuals, and functional specifications. Some gaming industry experience is required.

 

2.  Document planning, research, writing and editing. Computer literate and sensitive to the needs of the end users.

 

3.  Ability to reduce complex subjects into comprehensive modules.

 

4.  Willingness to demonstrate and/or train SG software to internal and external customers.

 

5.  Proactive planner, strong team player and able to tackle tasks with enthusiasm.

 

6.  Demonstrates flexibility and adapts quickly to the task requirements.

 

7.  Must be able to handle several projects concurrently and demonstrate adaptability

 

8.  Collect and clarify technical information.

 

9.  Quality conscious.

 

10.  Ability to meet deadlines.
