This position requires an individual who has superior professional and technical knowledge. This individual must be able to apply that knowledge in support of the university's technology and business needs. He or she must be able to analyze complex issues and problems using their experience and creativity in developing solutions and addressing business needs through technology. The system(s) administrator must see to the day-to-day operations of the Information Technology central computing systems (approximately 200) and supported services. These include Unix/Linux servers, Windows servers, a large SAN storage environment, the campus Web servers, Active Directory, as well as a variety of dedicated servers for specific department needs. This individual will help determine/develop procedures for Operations, and will provide leadership and help mentor junior system administrators. This position will work with the Networking Group in coordinating the services running on some of these systems. This person will also coordinate activities at times with the Electronic Security Analyst to deal with security events or intrusions. The Systems Administrator is required to foster and live by a philosophy of service as stated in the Santa Clara University Customer Service Statement. This person is expected to perform successfully in our team oriented environment. The Systems Administrator reports to the Manager of IT's Operations Group. I. Essential Duties (major functions, each accounting for 20% or more of the position) Analyze university needs when new services are considered; evaluate, design and specify server based solutions (including redundancy and SAN storage) where required; utilize your knowledge and experience in developing solutions. Monitor data center systems, checking for potential problems, resource availability, performance and "load" characteristics, network integrity, and security threats. Must monitor systems activity and usage to maintain a secure environment. Develop solutions for these. This person is primarily responsible for overseeing and operating IT's EMC SAN storage environment. This person is expected to determine procedures and methods for operational tasks required to maintain the data center servers and related systems in reliable, stable operation. He/she should be able to use their experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and objectives, and to identify potential problems and define/implement solutions. Provide leadership, training, and the ability to mentor more junior systems administrator staff. Interface with customers; this includes university vendors, faculty, staff, and students. II. Specific Duties (representative examples of tasks or projects related to be essential duties listed above) This person is expected to determine the procedures and methods for operational tasks required to maintain the reliable/stable operation of the data center servers. Also will provide some tasking to more junior Operations staff. Perform traditional computer system management: account creation, maintenance and removal; establishing upgrade and update schedules; establishing maintenance schedules; responsible for the design, implementation and operation of backup and archive procedures for the EMC SANs, as well as DASD. Have an active role in the university's growing use of virtualization technologies. Keep abreast of software releases and updates, keeping all systems at current release levels as appropriate for the successful operation of the data center in support of the university. Also included is the occasional evaluation of new software or systems under consideration for adoption. Insure that Operations' asset management procedures are maintained and documented. Provide technical guidance to junior Operations staff, helping them grow professionally. Occasionally helping to design operating system shell scripts for their use in increasing the automation of tasks. Must accept that on occasion and depending upon the situation, this individual will be required to work beyond, and in addition to, traditional work schedules/hours. Required to wear a pager or cell phone (provided by IT). Should have familiarity with systems operations on local area networks running TCP/IP and Novell Netware. (Training will be provided for Novell Netware as necessary.)III. Other Duties (duties which may be expected of the incumbent but are not considered essential under the Americans with Disabilities Act) Utilize technologies and tools in support of the data center's operation: Programming, scripting, diagnostic tools and systems. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.IV. Qualifications (minimum required; maximum preferred) Educational Applicants with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline are strongly preferred. An advanced degree is desirable. Professional Eight to ten year's experience in systems administration is desired. Knowledgeable and experienced in large-scale computer center operations with multiple systems running UNIX/Linux and NT/Windows 200x Server operating systems. Experience with managing and operating medium to large SAN storage environments (EMC preferred - SCU operates 90 TB of SAN.) Experienced in the management of multi-platform hardware and software environments including IBM, Intel, operating systems (AIX, Linux), scripting languages (Bourne shell, C Shell, etc.), networking (TCP/IP). Experience with the various newer Novell Network environments is desirable. The University technology environment is very dynamic and challenging. A person with a wide breadth of experience and who can adapt to changes working in a complex technology infrastructure environment is sought. Must be a "Self Starter" and able to be proactive in identifying problems (or potential problems) and solutions. Initiative, creativity, judgment, and the ability to multi-task are important qualities to be successful in this position. Interpersonal and communication skills are essential since the work style at the university is collaborative and team oriented.
