PROGRAMMER ANALYSTUniversity of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences Linguistic Data ConsortiumReference # 080725253The Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC) is an open consortium of universities, companies and government research laboratories. It creates, collects and distributes speech and text databases, lexicons, and other resources for research and development purposes. The University of Pennsylvania is LDC's host institution.Duties:This position will support LDC's linguistic data creation projects by providing programming, technical and research support in a lead capacity. Primary responsibilities will be to design, develop and implement programming solutions and oversee all technical aspects of the projects; work with LDC's project managers, annotators, programmers, and clients to develop achievable plans for corpus development and successfully execute them; develop annotation tools and data processing tools; support annotation workflow; investigate technical issues that may arise during the life cycles of projects, and provide timely solutions to them as necessary; work with project managers to develop and execute tool and data specifications; design and develop multimodal and multilingual software for collecting, normalizing, processing and annotating linguistic data; coordinate a team of programmers to provide timely support of project goals; support both in-house and international user communities; document tools and data formats; design, develop and implement creative solutions to various technical and research problems; interact with domain professionals at international meetings and via e-mail discussions; publish research and technical papers; pursue own research interests in relevant fields, as time allows, in order to seek new funding and research opportunities for the organization.Qualifications:BS/BA in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics or equivalent (advanced degree preferred); grammatical knowledge and reading ability of the Arabic language highly preferred; at least one year of relevant work experience in linguistic resource creation or human language technology development preferred; strong programming skills in at least two of the following programming languages: Python, C++, Java, Perl and Ruby; solid UNIX and Windows skills; solid knowledge of Unicode, XML and relational databases; experience in creating web applications; proven record of success in project support or project management; attention to detail; ability to work independently as well as within a team. The successful candidate will show the ability to juggle multiple tasks, prioritize responsibilities and manage time effectively in deadline-driven environment.
