JOB SUMMARY This position involves the day-to-day support of operations for the Houston-based Network Operations Center. Monitors data communications network to ensure that network is available to all system users and resolves data communications problems by performing the following duties. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Monitor’s communications network system performance to assure the dependable and uninterrupted operation of all communications services. Uses Network Management Systems software to detect faults and error messages that signal malfunction in communication software or hardware. Receive telephone calls from users with communications problems such as failure of data or voice services from customer location. Open and maintain incident tickets on active problems. Document daily incident interactions and actions taken using incident tracking software. Uses technical expertise and available hardware and software tools to identify and correct alarm conditions. Troubleshoots faults as necessary and to ensure the complete documentation of work performed and process followed using standard operating procedures. Perform testing and assist with installation activities for satellite communication systems, microwave systems and communications facilities in a 24-7 environment to determine if problems are hardware or software failures. Identifies malfunctioning or inoperative equipment, such as circuit cards or processing units assists with coordination for material replacement. Sets up new users and relocates or resets existing users with extensions, voice mail, email and telephone access codes. Ensures complete documentation of work performed, processes followed using standard operating procedures. Provide direction and guidance to customers and field technicians during the trouble-shooting or commissioning process including but not limited to, remote site equipment problems and issues, installation and set up, commissioning, testing and verification of satellite, microwave and RF communication systems. Perform diagnostics on computers, routers, modems, multiplexers, etcetera to determine nature of problem. Gather and review alarms and error codes to diagnose problem. Attach diagnostic equipment to data, network and telephony equipment to verify that services meet operational specifications. Read technical reference manuals for communications hardware and software to learn cause of problem. Instruct users and/or field technicians to follow steps for trouble identification and to follow instructions or enter specified equipment commands to resolve problem. Calls field service organization to request technician for field dispatch for services when problem cannot be resolved. Updates documentation to record new equipment installed, new sites, and changes to network and or computer configurations. Inspects in house communications systems, equipment, wire and cabling to verify connectivity and to isolate troubles. Trains users and other staff on proper use of equipment. Education and/or Experience Associate's degree (A. A.) in electronics, engineering, telecommunications or networking or equivalent from two-year college, military training or technical school is preferred.Minimum 5-6 years related experience in engineering, installation, operations or troubleshooting in satellite, microwave, data networking or telecommunications. 1-2 years experience desired in field engineering/installation or troubleshooting for satellite, microwave, data and RF products preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Computer and Networking Skills Proven experience with network management systems. Knowledgeable in the operation, integration, and testing of satellite, data, and voice and RF based systems. Proficiency with the following vendors preferred; ViaSat Systems, Comtech, EF Data, Anacom, Codan, Cisco, Adtran, SeaTel, Channel Master. Broad knowledge of frame relay, TCP/IP and VoIP is desired. Proven experience in troubleshooting skills on RF equipment, telephony equipment, including channel banks, digital cross connects, and the T-1/E-1 carrier systems.Proven experience with test equipment such as BERT tester, spectrum analyzer, protocol analyzer, volt meter, antenna pointing tools, etc. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have advanced knowledge of Windows XP, Microsoft Office suite, Microsoft Outlook; HP OpenView Service Desk, Spectrum Aprisma, Internet Explorer. Knowledge of various computer operating systems, networking configuration skills, dial up and LAN adapter settings as well as moderate computer skills required. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Certifications such as A+, Network +, CCNA are a plus. Must be available to work various shifts, weekends and holidays.
