V&V Infrastructure Engineer
POSITION DESCRIPTION –
Responsible to the Site Lead of the Bethesda Infrastructure Engineering Branch under the Government Customer’s Communications Infrastructure (NCI) Engineering Division of Technical Services Directorate under the IT/IS Contract for our Government Customer. This position would serve as a VoIP and VTC Engineer responsible for engineering our Government Customer’s Enterprise Infrastructure Network in Bethesda and its satellite sites. Responsibilities include: Design VoIP and VTC solutions, Provide infrastructure upgrades, and limited operations support. Provide analysis and recommendations pertaining to traffic optimization and enhancements in order to control packet jitter, packet delay, and packet loss. Provide solutions to Infrastructure Service Requests (ISR) from our Government Customer by providing Technical Assessments, Rough Order of Magnitudes (ROMs), and Engineering Orders (EOs). Participate in the maintenance of network configuration documentation, documentation on maintenance and design, as well as standard operating procedures (SOPs) that pertain to network engineering for Voice and Video Teleconferencing. Participate in customer, contract and vendor meetings as required. Participate in designing, engineering, documenting, and coordinating recommended changes to system architecture to accommodate technology upgrades and performance problems/issues. Coordinate with our Government Customer’s clients on the status of ISRs being engineered by the Network Engineer group. Support of network environments includes management of network system resources; network design and installation, problem analysis; network troubleshooting and network maintenance targeted specifically to voice and voice technologies.
Duties and qualifications, identifying both essential and marginal duties:
• Identify emerging initiatives to enable early, proactive support to the mission
• Analyze and define requirements.
• Develop Request for Change (RFC) impact reports and CONOPs documents
• Recognize and assess risks.
• Interact across IT/IS directorates, with other contractors and vendors, and with government representatives.
• Ability to perform tasks in a timely and accurate manner.
• Ability to function well in a rapidly changing environment with little or no direct supervision
• Proficiency in oral and written communications.
• Prepare engineering designs for enterprise systems and networks.
• Recommended to have knowledge of major telecommunications industry standards and protocols such as TCP/IP, Simple Management Network Protocol (SNMP), and hands-on Cisco and Marconi switches and router configuration and troubleshooting.
• Be comfortable configuring ATM, OSPF, QOS, and priority queueing.
• Be familiar with Cisco Call Manager servers and Tandberg Management System.
• Experience with the development environment, testing, assessment, performance evaluation, operation, and design of Enterprise networks.
• Knowledge and/or experience with the test equipment necessary to perform installation and monitoring functions, including sniffers. Should have experience with network management tools such as HP Openview.
• A qualified candidate should have at least 2+ years of hands-on Cisco and Ericsson multilayer switch and router configuration and troubleshooting.
• The applicant must also have at least 2+ years of experience in the design, implementation, support, and management of complex LAN solutions.
• The applicant should have a working knowledge of Government Customer’s network infrastructure.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift 50lbs and have the ability to climb an 8-foot step ladder without difficulty. Candidate must be willing and able to travel occasionally.
Education, Skill, and Experience Requirements:
This position requires either a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, CS or IT and 5-8 years or equivalent work experience.
• Technical experience must include ATM, OSPF, QOS, Cisco Call Manager, and Cisco Unity.
• Hands-on configuration and troubleshooting experience with routers, bridges, switches, storage area networks, network security, and network management in a UNIX and Windows 2000 environment is required.
• Candidate must have experience in installing, testing, debugging and troubleshooting networks with a variety of network peripherals to include routers, switches in a VoIP and VTC environment.
• Knowledge of Cisco, Ericsson, Juniper, and Foundry products desired (in order of importance). Certifications, i.e. CCNA, CCNP, Ericsson, CISSP.
• MCSE certification is a major plus.
• Expertise to develop and implement solutions for VOIP, IP multicast, IPv6, and/or other emerging network technologies is required.
• Strong oral and written communications skills.
• Experience that encompasses network management and support, integration services, and security audit and design.
• Knowledge of Government Customer’s infrastructure is strongly desired.
