Salary commensurate with qualifications and experienceDESCRIPTION:The Division Director of Data Life Cycle Services (DD, DLCS) will serve on the Executive Team of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and report to the SDSC Director. The DLCS DD will direct the operation of one of the largest academic data repositories in the world, foster a synergistic and effective team that provides service and support to a broad range of digital data customers in the academic, private, and public sectors, and will further SDSC’s tradition of innovation and leadership in the campus, state, national, and international data cyberinfrastructure community. The DLCS DD will oversee groups spanning the entire data life cycle, including data ingest and curation; data storage, management, and preservation; web services and portal development; and data use. The DLCS DD will work closely with other UCSD and UC entities including the UCSD Libraries, the Administrative Computing and Telecommunications group, CalIT2, the UC Grid community, UC Office of the President, the California Digital Library, and others. The DLCS DD will represent SDSC data cyberinfrastructure efforts at the leadership level on the UCSD campus, within the University of California system, and beyond.The DLCS DD will create and implement an actionable vision for DLCS, and oversee DLCS strategic planning, systems management and acquisition, new technology evaluation, and service provision to end users. The DD will oversee the development and implementation of policies and operational procedures for reliable, effective, and trusted data cyberinfrastructure, and establish quality control standards / procedures that will provide consistent, timely, and effective response to end users.The DD will provide strong management and coordination to technical teams responsible for the development and delivery of data infrastructure and services, and focus SDSC data to be responsive to the needs of present and emerging data applications and users. The DD will develop, implement, and maintain appropriate data center procedural and administrative practices, reliability procedures, and security protocols to ensure the overall accessibility and safety of the digital data that is stored at SDSC – a primary concern.The DD will conduct operational, financial and administrative planning needed for DLCS success. The DD will deeply collaborate and cooperate with UCSD and UC technology providers and data-oriented entities, as well as national partners such as the Library of Congress, the National Archives and Records Administration, the National Science Foundation, etc. Some travel will be required for the position.QUALIFICATIONS:Proven leadership skills in a collaborative environment. Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of partners in all sectors; ability to communicate effectively about DLCS at a level that creates advocates and customers.Excellent management skills. Strong commitment to fostering growth and development of others. Strong skills to manage complex concurrent projects in a team environment. Demonstrated skills in goal-setting and goal attainment.Superior oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Excellent presentation, negotiation, and public relations skills.Deep experience with and knowledge of storage, software, hardware, and technologies and systems involved in digital data access, curation, management, use, storage, and preservation.Advanced degree and significant experience within the computer science, information science, library science, computational science, or other fields related to the position.Strong service orientation with demonstrated experience meeting actual customer needs and expectations; ability to match the needs of prospective customers with the appropriate software, services, and infrastructure in DLCS.Excellent benefits that start the first day of hire.
