Applications Developer

As Applications Developer you will analyze, design, develop, debug, and modify new and existing applications to support the Publications Division's business needs.

Additional Responsibilities may include:

* Analyzing, designing, developing and ensuring quality of software code for applications and/or ETL processes; actively soliciting the involvement of other developers to ensure integrity and cross-product consistency
* Providing support for released applications or processes; maintaining existing code by making necessary changes
* Performing testing of applications or processes; verifying, tracking, and fixing \"bugs\"; modifying design, as necessary
* Discussing technical and design issues with internal project teams as well as internal customers, using agile development methodologies; anticipating time needed to complete projects and assisting in modular product scheduling
* Designing, developing, and ensuring quality of various prototype and demonstration systems
* Writing external and internal documentation and assisting in document planning
* Performing other duties as assigned

Qualifications


Essential

* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field
* 5 years of programming experience in an applications development or consulting environment, utilizing Java and other programming language(s)
* Experience developing Java-based web applications using Java EE technologies
* Experience with an RDBMS system such as MySQL within enterprise applications
* Strong knowledge of Java programming principles and user-interface issues
* Strong knowledge of web service technologies such as SOAP, Javascript, and XML

Essential Equivalent

* Associate degree in the same fields with 7 years of the stated essential qualifications ~OR~
* High School diploma (GED) with 9 years of the stated essential qualifications

Additional

* Excellent programming, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
* Ability to work independently and with a team
* Ability to learn, retain, grow, and apply business knowledge related to assigned tasks
* Working knowledge of Windows operating systems

Preferences

* Experience using Apache Tomcat webserver
* Experience optimizing Java-based web applications, using Java profiling tools and load testing
* Experience using performance analysis and profiling tools such as JProbe and Yourkit
* Strong knowledge of Spring use and configuration within Java enterprise applications
* Strong knowledge of database schema design
* Strong knowledge of automated testing technologies and practices within Java enterprise applications, including unit tests, integration tests, behavioral tests and TDD
* Strong knowledge of continuous integration strategies and tools such as CruiseControl or Hudson
* Strong knowledge of enterprise application build tools such as Ant or Maven
* Working knowledge of technologies such as REST, JSON, JMS, and message queues
* Familiarity with dynamic languages such as Groovy
* Familiarity with the Grails Framework
* Familiarity building rich internet applications using technologies such as Flex / Flash / HTML5
