Systems Administrator/Scientific Programmer

NVI, Inc has an immediate opening for a part-time Systems Administrator and/or Scientific Programmer to support the NASA Goddard VLBI group.  Work will be performed on-site at the NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

 

Depending on the candidate’s skills, training and desire, responsibilities may include providing support in the following areas:

A)  Supporting a variety of systems including linux/Macs/Windows PCs.  This involves archiving and restoring data; adhering to NASA security requirement; installing new hardware and software; responding to user requests; etc.

B) Developing, maintaining, and supporting applications to automate data processing and data distribution and to make data and analysis available via the internet.

C)  Development of software to perform data acquisition and analysis. This may include real-time data acquisition, as well as post-processing data.

 

We are seeking someone willing to commit to at least 15 hours a week. This position has the potential to grow into a full-time position.

 

Work Environment.  The Goddard VLBI group is world renowned as the premier geodetic VLBI group. NVI provides important support for the International VLBI Service for Astrometry and Geodesy (IVS). Two members of the IVS board are NVI staff.  The Goddard VLBI group is the IVS Coordinating Center; an IVS Analysis Center; and an IVS Technology Center.

 

The ideal candidate will be someone who is a fast learner, self-directed, and works well in a team environment.  Required technical skills include familiarity with

A)  Linux and Unix;

B) Scripting languages such as perl;

C)  HTML;

D)  Applications programming languages such as C or Fortran.

Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn are very important, and may compensate for deficiencies in some particular area.
