Hardware Specialist / Systems Administrator
UW Medicine Information Technology Services department is a shared services organization, which supports all of UW Medicine. UW Medicine is comprised of UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, UW School of Medicine, and UW Physicians Network. The IT Services organization is responsible for ongoing support and maintenance of the infrastructure and applications which support these institutions, along with the implementation of new services and applications that are used to support and further the mission of patient care, research and teaching.
UW Medicine Information Technology Services department has an outstanding opportunity for a Hardware Specialist / Systems Administrator. This project team member will work with the Microsoft project team to fine tune all hardware configuration requirements (client and server) for the Amalga data warehouse. This includes server hardware, networked storage mechanisms, and working with the Security Infrastructure Team (SIT) and Data Center Placement (DCOMM) specialists to configure network connectivity. In addition, depending on project requirements, additional hardware such as desktop workstations, printers, bar code scanners etc. may also need to be configured.
Under the general supervision of the IT Manager, the Senior Computer Specialist is responsible for providing senior-level system management, development, programming, implementation, consultation, and maintenance in support of various UW Medicine units. Essential functions of this position include providing technical leadership and expert consultation to both faculty and clinical staff. This position is responsible for interfacing and collaborating productively with application administrators, system owners and system operators. The Senior Computer Specialist must be able to develop complex technical and functional specifications, manage his/her work load toward agreed upon milestones, and negotiate priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
Key responsibilities include:
•Review initial hardware specification and assist with refining as needed
•Perform any required baseline testing on new or existing hardware to be used by Amalga
•Drive the configuration and installation of hardware in the customer environment
•Help with establishing secure VPN connectivity between Microsoft and customer IT environment
•Conduct site survey to confirm location for hardware installation
•Participate in relevant architecture discussions during planning and configuration phases
•Assist with system testing
•Conduct planning, configuration and testing activities for additional hardware related to Amalga project such as printers, bar code scanners, biometric authentication devices etc., depending on which of these devices are used in your environment
•Provide support for hardware infrastructure post go-live
•Assist as needed in designing and implementing network configuration specifications for Amalga
•Perform any required network testing on new or existing hardware to be used by Amalga
•Assist with the configuration and installation of hardware in the customer environment
•Help with establishing secure VPN connectivity between Microsoft and customer IT environment
•In conjunction with SIT and UW Te3ch, perform network analysis and configuration with Microsoft project team guidance
•Participate in relevant architecture discussions during planning and configuration phases •Assist with system testing
•Develop automated and scalable system management applications to effectively manage UW Medicine IT Infrastructure using tools such as C#, ASP.NET, SQL, and HTML,
•Design, specify, install, configure, and support Windows servers, IIS web servers, Citrix terminal servers and application servers in a complex healthcare information systems environment, as needed for Amalga deployments
•Design and deploy security measures that are compliant with UW Medicine security policies and procedures such as HIPPA
•Install, configure and maintain SQL Servers; completing necessary documentation and backups. •Design and develop middle tier business logic and front-end user interfaces such as IIS Web Portal, SharePoint and Citrix Presentation Manager, as needed for Amalga deployments
•Facilitate the planning of system and feature upgrades, including participating in off-hours service outage upgrades
•Work with selected software and hardware vendors to provide system functionality in a manner consistent with Medical Centers’ systems standards, policies and practices
•Analyze, test, monitor, and optimize system performance; identifying and resolving issues
•Plan and conduct enterprise application deployment and upgrade; modify setup sequences and/or debugging code; identifying and resolving issues
•Plan and conduct user interface tests; maximizing usability and efficiency; identifying and resolving issues related to the end-user experience
•Provide on-going maintenance and support for Amalga system, after go-live
•Create and maintain disaster recovery plans(s) of existing systems
•Evaluate market trends and industry for new technologies
Project Management:
•Identify technical requirements, develop functional specifications, drive implementation and deliver successful project go live
•Serve as a primary liaison between project stakeholders and the IT Services support teams
•Develop and communicate timeline and deliverables of project milestones
•Applies systems analysis techniques and procedures, including consulting with users, to determine server hardware, system functional specifications and problem determination and troubleshooting
•Facilitate and implement change control standard throughout the project life cycle, and implement required steps in preparing for production readiness review prior to project goes live
Support, Training, Policies and Procedures:
Offer training and support to end-users of deployed systems and applications
•Create and maintain customer request tracking system, and plan for timely response to call requests
•Develop and maintain processes and technical documentation such as backup, system maintenance plan, business resumption procedure
•Establish standard policies and procedures and ensure that they are followed by end-users
Required Education: BA in computer science, mathematics, engineering or related degree. Equivalent experience may substitute for the educational requirement.
Experience:
Requires 5 years of progressive leadership level in systems design and administration, troubleshooting, maintenance-related programming, and production support.
Requires 4 years of progressive subject matter expertise in implementing and supporting high-availability enterprise Microsoft Windows systems such as Windows 2003 Cluster, MSSQL, Active Directory GPO, Exchange 2003 Cluster, Enterprise SAN Storage and Citrix Farm.
Requires 2 years of progressive IT project management experience to lead small to medium scale projects. Independently determines methods and procedures on new assignments.

Microsoft Windows OS Certifications (MCSE 2003 a plus)
