Sr. Corrosion & Materials Specialist

Responsibilities include: In-House Consultant: Provide materials of construction technical support to Albemarle's domestic and international chemical manufacturing and R&D Facilities. Activities will also include wide-ranging materials compatibility and evaluation projects, in addition to materials of construction support to capital projects, and for corporate specifications and standards.Failure Analysis: Provide predictive and preventative materials selection and technical support, as well as "hands-on" failure analysis, covering the entire spectrum of engineering materials, from carbon steel, polyethylene, and natural rubber all the way to tantalum, PTFE, and the perfluoroelastomers. The primary challenge is to insure that materials degradation mechanisms do not result in loss of containment events.Technical Support: Devise, set-up, and execute laboratory testing (in a dedicated and fully-equipped laboratory), as well as in-situ testing, and maintain Albemarle’s ability to quickly conduct tests. This position is located at Albemarle’s central R&D facility, and has full access to Albemarle’s extensive array of analytical assets for materials evaluations and problem solving.Corrosion & Materials Knowledge Base: Maintain and evolve Albemarle’s corrosion and materials compatibility knowledge base, including development and delivery of fundamental corrosion training programs.
Educational Requirements:BS or MS in Mechanical, Metallurgical, Materials, or Chemical Engineering, or a related field
Essentials Qualifications:8+ years experience in the Chemical Process Industry or similar industry Understands the multi-disciplinary aspects of corrosion & materials selectionBasic familiarity with chemistry and chemical engineering principles and analytical techniquesBasic knowledge of laboratory practices and a strong motivation to be safe in a lab environmentFamiliarity and experience with most engineering materials (metals & non-metals)Experience with most common NDE and NDT technologies and applicationsIndependent self-starter with results-oriented focus Proven ability in problem solving and multi-tasking Outstanding communications and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written Ability to travel to Albemarle's domestic & international plant sites, and related fabricator's facilities
Desired Qualifications:Root Cause Failure Analysis training and/or experience Rotating equipment and mechanical seals experience Experience with exotic and nonmetallic materials of construction, such as the refractory & reactive metals, fluoropolymers, FRP materials, and coating, lining, & plating materials.Familiarity with ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel (Section VIII) and Piping Codes (B31.3)Proficient in most common office computer software packages, such as Word, Excel, etc.Member of NACE and/or ASM
