Position Overview
This is an outstanding opportunity to work in a high visibility position. You will enjoy being involved in all aspects of product development and support and see the results and impact of your work. You will develop epoxy-resin prepregs and adhesive formulations to customer requirements. This role supports our engineering group and factory with analytical studies, experiments, and scale-up of new product formulations. You will also play a key role in utilizing (conducting physical and mechanical testing) and maintaining lab equipment and keeping the lab current with respect to instrumentation and procedure.
Reports to: Senior Chemist
Key duties and responsibilities include the following:Formulates and develops new epoxy systems including carbon fiber, aramid, and fiberglass prepreg products for various composite applications across all composite markets.Provides technical and analytical support to Engineering (DSC, DMA, FTIR, HPLC, melt rheology, resin kinetics) in new product scale-up and technology transfer.Assists with the processing of new as well as existing products to evolve best practices for improved quality, robustness, and yield.Interacts with applications/sales engineers to determine customer design criteria, product performance requirements, etc.Engages in direct communication with vendors, sales reps, and customers for specific and strategic product development project applications. Provides input on project feasibility and timing.Occasional travel (up to 10% including overnight).
Qualifications/Skills/CredentialsA Bachelors Degree in Chemistry or Materials Science; 3-5+ years formulating experience in epoxy composites or related adhesive products is desired.Knowledge of composite prepreg processing/lamination/formulating is highly desired. Good understanding of how to apply industry standards, testing, methodology, and programs.Understanding of polymer rheology, cure kinetics, and processing. Familiarity with prepreg machinery and processing. Understanding of composite design.Possesses good technical knowledge, logical reasoning ability, excellent written and verbal communication skills, good interpersonal skills and good organizational skills.Experienced in both physical and mechanical testing and maintaining lab equipment and instrumentation.Must be computer literate and familiar with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Experience with MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint is needed.
