ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY SPECIALIST

The Department of Environmental Safety at the University of Maryland, College Park, has an immediate opening for a full-time Environmental Health and Safety Specialist.  This position will assist in the Department’s Environmental Affairs and Occupational Safety & Health units by performing multi-disciplinary duties, including but not limited to:  collecting, transporting, packaging of waste; maintaining records relating to the hazardous, radioactive, and special medical waste programs; surveying laboratories for hazards & emergency contact information; preparing and posting laboratory warning signs; and testing of fume hoods and other exhaust devices.  The selected candidate will support the implementation of environmental and safety programs by performing routine inspection audits; maintaining the associated data management system; implementing environmental and safety programs; and participating periodically in the 24-hour “on-call� emergency response program. A high school diploma or GED with a stable work history is required; two – four years experience performing related work is desirable.  Must be able to pass a medical exam for working with hazardous materials and wearing personal protective equipment, including a full-face respirator.  This is an exempt position with excellent leave, medical coverage, retirement, and tuition remission benefits.  Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
