Research Director, System Management Software

IDC's Enterprise Platforms Research Group is seeking an experienced Research Director for a position as an infrastructure software industry analyst. Reporting to the Program Vice President, this individual will serve as a lead analyst for designated market research areas within IDC's System Management Software program. The candidate is expected to have broad IT industry knowledge of key system management functions, such as infrastructure monitoring and management, event automation, service level management, change and configuration management, distributed and mainframe system management, virtualization management, and multi-tier and Web application management.
Familiarity with the system management software offerings of major vendors, such as BMC, CA (Computer Associates), HP, IBM, and Microsoft, is required. Key themes include server provisioning, datacenter automation, application management, and IT Service Management including process frameworks such as ITIL.
Responsibilities:Frequent communication with IT industry vendors, clients, and end-users.Writing IDC research publications in designated market areas.Supporting IDC client inquiries and briefings and working closely with clients.Developing and publishing market forecast and market revenue share reports which may involve researching and building company revenue modelsAnalyzing and reporting on demand-side survey dataExecuting on consulting engagements, including white papers.Working closely with other groups in IDC to create collaborative researchProviding selected information to the trade and business PressWorking closely with IDC sales and marketing to communicate and promote IDC system management software programs.
This position will require a team approach, working closely with related IDC research programs to maintain excellence in report deliverables and increase client interactions, while developing broad perspectives on industry directions and trends.
Candidates with 10+ years experience in systems management software market analysis with a major vendor or analyst firm is desired. Writing skills and the ability to produce major documents in the content areas according to a published time schedule are key requirements. Bachelors degree required, masters degree a plus.
Position is based in IDC’s Framingham, MA or San Mateo, CA office.
