Senior Software Developer

Arbitron Inc. is a media and marketing research firm serving radio broadcasters, cable companies, advertisers, advertising agencies and outdoor advertising companies. Arbitron’s core businesses are measuring network and local market radio audiences across the United States; surveying the retail, media and product patterns of local market consumers; and providing application software used for analyzing media audience and marketing information data. The Company has developed the Portable People Meter, a new technology for media and marketing research.

Through its Scarborough Research joint venture with The Nielsen Company, Arbitron also provides media and marketing research services to the broadcast television, newspaper and online industries.

We are looking for a Senior Software Developer, to join our Information Technology team in our Columbia, MD facility.

Position Summary
As a Senior Software Developer design and develop system framework and application components, and assist with the development of programming practices and procedures. The work environment is dynamic and challenging. The right candidate must be a team player who works well without supervision, has the ability to work on multiple projects and can organize and prioritize their work to achieve desired results in a timely manner.

ResponsibilitiesDefine and review requirements working with cross-functional teams Create specifications documenting system architecture & design Have a strong focus on best design approaches and best practices Use object-oriented design methods (e.g., UML), creating architecture views Write, debug, test, and maintain software code of high/unique complexity that meet user requirements Participate and review deployment strategies and process Generate the supporting technical documentation Ensures that sound software engineering principles and life cycle methodologies are applied Under limited supervision, be a part of a development team involving internal IT personnel and other contractors

RequirementsBSCS/BSEE with 9 years of software development experience or an MSCS/MSEE with 6 years development experience Strong organizational and communication skills, and a capacity for attending to details Team player with a good attitude and ability to grasp new technologies & react to changes in a demanding and fast-paced environment Creative, focused, results-oriented, self-motivated, resourceful problem-solver with excellent debugging skills Expertise in the JAVA/J2EE development and architectural design experience with due consideration to adaptability, maintainability, performance and scalability issues Expertise in developing web based applications using JAVA and JSP Solid understanding of data Structures, algorithms, and Object-Oriented design Must have hands-on experience with socket level programming/RMI/Client-Server implementations Experience using UNIX shell tools and development of shell scripts Experience with Oracle or Database development Must work in a team-oriented and collaborative fashion with software/firmware engineers Experience in software development in C/C++ is a plus
