POET, the largest ethanol producer in the world according to the Renewable Fuels Association, is an established leader in the biorefining industry through project development, design and construction, research and development, plant management, and marketing. The 20-year old company currently operates 24 production facilities in the United States with four more in construction or under development. The company produces and markets more than 1.4 billion gallons of ethanol annually.

SUMMARY

Technical Managers are responsible for plant production and directly supervise the operations, lab, and maintenance teams. The Technical manager maximizes efficiencies of plant operations while optimizing plant run time, troubleshoots and identifies process needs to maintain production levels, is accountable for all plant operations, production goals, and lab; ensures compliance of environmental and health & safety needs of Team Memberss.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Accountable for all plant operations, maintenance, production goals and laboratory operations.

2. Approve operations, maintenance and laboratory hiring.

3. Oversee accountabilities for all aspects of environmental, health and safety of all plant personnel, plant operations and the community in which we operate.

4. Supervises professional, technical and support staff on a day-to-day bases, including determining workloads and schedules, implementing and interpreting policies and procedures, evaluating and training staff, approving and making hiring and termination recommendations.

5. Insure that all city, county, state and federal regulations are being met at all times.

6. Strive for maximum efficiency in plant operations, optimize plant up-time or runtime and minimize all plant downtime.

7. Carry out all directives from the General Manager.

8. Ensure that all plant policies are implemented and followed.

9. Maintain and enforce all safety programs and procedures.

10.  Facilitate communication between departments.

11.  Responsible for budget preparation and cost control for the physical plant.

12.  Present capital request justifications to the General Manager.

13.  Communicate production performance numbers to the General Manager.

14.  Report to General Manager, Shareholders and Board of Directors upon request.

15.  Maintain a team environment with other plant departments.

16.  Champion POET in the community.

17.  Maintain a high level of customer service and friendly atmosphere.

18.  Others duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS/COMPETENCIES

 

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position along with effective oral and written communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills.

 

B.S. or B.A. or greater in Engineering, Chemical Engineer preferred.

 

Five (5) years experience in an operating processing plant environment such as grain processing, chemical processing or pharmaceutical. 

 

Additional training in microbiology, team building and Access is helpful. 

 

Familiar or experience with Microsoft applications, DCS control and DCS historian systems beneficial. 



 



WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position operates in a plant environment, as well as office environment.  In the office, the Team Member will work on a personal computer. In the plant environment, Team Member will be required to adhere to all Safety requirements and may be exposed to noise, heat, and other elements both inside and outside. This position is largely self-directed and requires understanding of company policy, procedures, and values.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this position, the intern will be exposed to moving, mechanical parts, dusty conditions, high noise levels, internal and external temperature/weather conditions, and exposed to chemicals.

Team Member may work in confined spaces; climb ladders and/or steps up to 175 feet; and lift up to 60 pounds. Continuous operation of the plant may require 12-hour shift work and may be called in as needed.
