TECHNICAL APPLICATIONS SPECIALIST
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The hybrid Technical Applications Scientist (70% field/30% remote support) is responsible for providing a broad range of technical, software, applications support to Applied Biosystems (AB) customers and AB sales by telephone and in the field. Specific responsibilities include:
Provide customers and field personnel with technical support by relaying technical/software product information through effective telephone and e-mail troubleshooting Report on activities in the field on a regular basis to Manager through written reports and regular telephone conversations. Report on technical trends going on in the territory by relating customer concerns and issues to the appropriate people in the company. Document customer reported product problems and questions by entering relevant information into a computer based call-tracking system. Document field activities in a support database. Develop and maintains knowledge of department processes and systemsAccompany Sales Representatives on sales calls in customers' laboratories to provide technical and applications assistance in response to customer inquiries.Perform product demonstrations in the field. Support conditional sales placements in the field through on-site visits and telephone communication. Collaborate with Sales Representatives to develop technical selling strategies.Provide start-up applications training to customers in their laboratories.Demonstrate proper operating procedures with AB instrumentation and applications. Prepare and present seminars to customers, potential customers and AB employees as requested. Participate in the field test site determination process. Provide reports to Product Marketing personnel on new product capabilities and acceptance.
REQUIREMENTS
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written: Ability to provide the appropriate responses to customers and co-workers, and communicate specific scientific concepts at a basic level. The ideal candidate will have public speaking and/or teaching experience and previous experience with customer interface is desirable. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the scientific community. Ability to write publications that conform to prescribed style and format. Reasoning: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, legal documents and scientific data. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral, diagram, or schedule form. Math Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of science or engineering and algebra. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Good organizational and troubleshooting skills to quickly respond to specific questions and problems requiring timely and accurate information Technical competency and extensive experience with real-time PCR. The ideal candidate will have had experience with Applied Biosystems real-time PCR instruments, chemistries and applications including gene expression and genotyping. Ability to quickly assimilate new technologies and apply this to the position.Experience with bioinformatics systems and understanding of genomic annotations. Education: Requires knowledge and skills normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) in Biology, Microbiology or Biochemistry, or equivalent experience. The ideal candidate will have a M.S. or Ph.D. Experience: Requires 3-5 years of previous laboratory experience to include expertise in basic techniques related to assigned specialty. Experience with Excel, Word and Powerpoint software. The ideal candidate will also be available to travel to customer sites as a significant part of their duties.
