Strategic Sourcing Specialist, Senior
Responsible for developing/negotiating and managing complex/ high dollar impact contracts for assigned projects/major commodities and supplier development/partnering initiatives. Performs strategic approach to supplier sourcing to reduce costs, to include support to the manufacturing operations team in order to achieve goals and objectives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide support to the manufacturing operations management team in order to achieve established company goals and objectives.
- Interview potential suppliers and keep abreast of developments that influence the markets for assigned commodities.
- Investigates and evaluates new sources of supply that will yield reduced costs with considerations given to specific contractual requirements.
- Develop supplier Master Material Agreements (MMAs).
- Negotiates supplier contracts using advanced financial analyses, and involved agreements dealing with any of the following issues: joint development opportunities, exchange of proprietary information, patent rights, etc.
- Provide inventory management support to drive down spending with consignment arrangements, volume discounts, service levels, safety stock, bar coding, etc. for assigned projects/commodities.
- Provide leadership role in assigned major make vs. buy studies and develop/implement plan(s) and negotiate applicable contracts.
- Responsible for identifying future opportunities in major commodity areas (process improvements, integrated suppliers, information systems, etc.).
- Provides functional procurement support/guidance/training to buying staff as relates to supplier development, consolidation, certification, etc.
- Prepares Requests for Quotation (RFQ), (contracts/purchase orders) evaluates and selects suppliers based on technical (in concert w/manufacturing/supplier quality/engineering), contractual, schedule and cost requirements in accordance with established purchasing policies/procedures.
- Acts as technical interface between component/production suppliers and development engineers to determine new and alternate sources and ensure project timelines are met in an effective manner.
- Sources, selects and qualifies components used in the companys technology. Investigates alternate component technologies or supplies, reducing cost and improving quality and reliability.
- Responsible for assuring appropriate sourcing documents are developed and implemented as required (i.e. Confidentiality Agreements, Statements of Work, etc.).
- Performs special assignment duties as identified by Director of Global Supply Management.
Formal Training/Education:
Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Business; MBA preferred.
Experience:
5-8 years of industrial purchasing/sourcing experience in biotechnology, pharmaceutical/medical diagnostics or with a combination of extensive experience in procurement/sourcing/operations to support a technical manufacturing environment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Good understanding of manufacturing processes (technical, costs) for both instruments and consumables.
- Strong negotiation skills with a working knowledge and understanding of generally accepted business and basic legal terms.
- Good understanding of secondary technologies such as PCB board design, injection molding, etc.
- Hands-on experience in purchasing management programs such as JIT, consignment inventory, systems contracting, electronic data interchange (EDI), supplier development/strategic alliances, supplier consolidation and certified supplier programs using a "continuous improvement" approach.
- Strong skills and expertise in developing complex purchase orders/contracts, and providing effective inventory management support.
- Must possess knowledge of business law with an understanding of the legal framework surrounding business contracts and be literate in applicable laws regarding the procurement of goods and services.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively in a cross-functional environment.
- Must possess an even temperament and be able to resolve problems through an interactive, positive style rather than confrontation.
- Proven track record of analytical/synergistic abilities.
- Excellent communications and team-building skills.
- Excellent project management, negotiation/commercial and interpersonal skills.
- Able to manage complex issues and negotiations with minimum oversight.
- Ability to travel globally.
