Staff Research Engineer - (Job Number: 0809317) Description DePuy, Inc. develops and markets products under the DePuy Orthopaedics, DePuy Spine, CODMAN® and MITEK® brands. DePuy Orthopaedics and DePuy Trauma and Extremities provide products for reconstructing damaged or diseased joints, and for repairing and reconstructing traumatic skeletal injuries. DePuy Spine facilitates fusion of the spine and correction of spinal deformities, including CHARITÉ™, the first artificial spinal disc. Codman provides for the surgical treatment of neurological and central nervous system disorders through products such as hydrocephalic shunt valve systems, implantable drug pumps and micro-surgical instrumentation. DePuy Mitek offers innovative devices in sports medicine for the treatment of soft tissue injuries. This position is located in Warsaw Indiana.The Staff Research Engineer will be responsible for the development and management of research projects, which may involve product development, advanced technologies, and biomaterials. Responsibilities will include the following; develop detailed research plans, perform advanced computational analysis, manage internal/external resources to achieve project objectives, and make recommendations in support of product development and future research. Manage research projects from initial concept and feasibility through transition to product development. Stay current with advances in orthopaedic surgery, biomechanics, and biomaterials. Provide technical assistance to Product Development, Marketing, Sales, Quality, Clinical and Regulatory, and Manufacturing groups. Evaluate internal and external research proposals relative to strategic objectives and business plan. Attend technical meetings and participate in activities of technical societies. Prepare reports and presentations for both internal and external publication. Assess new computational technologies and develop improved methods of product evaluation. Conduct hands-on advanced FEA using ANSYS and/or ABAQUS. May coordinate and direct activities of outside contractors. A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering combined with a minimum of 7 years medical product development/research, advanced finite element analysis (FEA) experience; or a Masters degree and 5 years experience; or Ph.D. with 3 year experience is required. An advanced degree is preferred. Project management skills are a must. Previous supervisory experience is highly preferred. Excellent problem solving, technical writing, presentation, negotiation, interpersonal and communication skills are required. Knowledge of FEA and proficiency with commercial codes ANSYS and ABAQUS are required. Technical and hands-on experience with one or more of the following areas: advanced FEA applications, multi-body dynamics (ADAMS), constrained optimization techniques, and/or probabilistic methods are required. Ability to judge applicability of state, national, and international standards and regulations to research and development projects are also required. Domestic && International travel up to 10% is required.
