Software Engineer (Research)
The Mathis/Benoist laboratory is a biomedical research group at the Joslin Diabetes Center, on the Harvard Medical School campus in Boston, also affiliated with the Broad Institute. It is an exciting group of students, fellows and research specialists from a variety of horizons. Our research focuses on autoimmune diseases such as Diabetes and Arthritis, and applies high-throughput genomic technologies to explore these diseases. The lab also plays a leadership role in the Immunological Genome project (ImmGen; www.immgen.org), a consortium of collaborating immunologists and computational biologists working towards a full dissection of the genetic regulatory network in immune cells.
Interactive database-driven web tools are used to portray the results of this research, and to manage the flow of data and materials. These require thoroughness and diligence in the SQL management of the data, but also creativity, as we constantly explore novel modes of graphical representations at the user/public interface. If you are ready for such challenges, this position might be right for you.
The Software Engineer must be well rounded and capable of adapting to the changing requirements in an academic research laboratory. Good problem solving skills are a must. You will primarily work on the development and management of web databases that project, in a dynamic and interactive mode, the knowledge generated by the laboratory and its collaborators in the ImmGen consortium. You will play a leading role in orchestrating the flow of data within ImmGen and its display on the project website.
This position will work with biologists, computational and graphic specialists in the lab, as well as computational biology collaborators in the ImmGen project. Ultimately, your job will be to transform the concepts formulated by scientists into novel data structures and user interfaces.
Qualifications Include:Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or closely related field. 3+ years demonstrated experience in Java (both client- and server-side) and SQL (prefer PostgreSQL, but MySQL, Oracle, etc. will also be considered) Flash XML/XML Schema SOAP/WSDL, JAX-WS JSP/Servlets/Javascript Web application development and deployment Windows and Linux administration Tomcat administration Subversion Desirable: JUnit, Netbeans, Photoshop/Illustrator/Fireworks
