Senior Scientist/Senior Engineer (Job Code 2008-28JK)
Senior Scientist/Senior Engineer (Job Code 2008-28JK) -- U.S. Genomics is seeking a Senior Scientist or Senior Engineer for the continued development of an advanced product development program for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Bioagent Autonomous Network Detector (BAND) program. USG's proprietary technology for mapping and identification of individual DNA molecules offers a unique advantage for multiplex threat detection with high sensitivity and specificity. The Scientist/Engineer will lead the design, evaluation, and analysis of U.S. Genomics core microfluidic technology for single DNA molecule manipulation and detection. This includes the evaluation of current chip designs involving electrokinetic and hydrodynamic movement of sample, introduction of novel microfluidic functions, the identification of necessary improvements to chip design, and the associated modeling work required to analyze chip performance. In addition, the successful candidate will evaluate chip design and operation relative to sensitivity, specificity, throughout, and multiplexing capabilities. The position will interface the Research, Engineering, and Application groups to address chip analysis and design needs, and the implementation of novel microfluidic functions. This includes chemical reactions, fractionation, concentration, and manipulation of long DNA molecules.
Required skills -- A PhD in Biophysics, Engineering, Microfluidics, Physical Chemistry, or Physics with 5-10 years of post graduate experience is required. Candidates with relevant backgrounds will also be considered. The ability to analyze electric fields, heat transfer, and fluid flow in a microfluidic environment are required. Familiarity with multi-physics simulation and design software is a plus (e.g. COMSOL, AutoCAD and/or Pro-Engineer). Ability to design and set up experimental microfluidic instrumentation is preferred and includes interfacing microfluidic devices, optical microscopy, image analysis, and fluorescence detection. First-hand experience in MEMS and microfluidic development in plastics or glass is a plus. Experience in machine design and prototyping is a plus. Proven leadership, creativity, and critical analysis are required with an established record of successful implementation of microfluidic instrumentation are required in addition to excellent communication skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment. The candidate will be expected to make presentations and reports describing the impact of chip operation parameters and performance.
U.S. Genomics is ideally located minutes from Interstates 93 and 95/128, the Anderson MBTA station, a hub for commuter rail and airport shuttle service, and TradeCenter 128. Numerous restaurants, retail stores and the Woburn Mall are close by.
