Summary: Manages and directs the organization in the identification and development of new technologies, based on long-term product and profitability goals, by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate engineering professionals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Ø Independently, or in collaboration with portfolio management and product development, research and identify technologies for potential development and application to existing or new Biomet 3i product lines.
Ø Determine feasibility of technologies, both in practical application, estimated costs, and estimated benefits to Biomet 3i. Identify risks and opportunities of pursuit.
Ø Working with clinical research, internal capabilities, or other outside testing sites, develop test protocols and coordinate verification activities as required.
Ø Prepare reports and presentations on findings, to allow executive committees to approve/reject technology viability.
Ø Work with the Biomet 3i legal department and executives to license outside technologies as applicable.
Ø Work with the Biomet 3i legal department, executives, and outside counsel to solidify internal intellectual properties as applicable.
Ø Once a technology is deemed viable, coordinate with portfolio management, marketing, and product development on the exact products and applications in which the technology will be applied.
Ø In coordination with manufacturing departments or outside firms, develop and design the processes to produce the new technologies. Manage and/or support the purchase and installation of required infrastructure and materials, as well as subsequent equipment and process validation activities. Determine resource requirements and initial process costing.
Ø Work with the Biomet 3i regulatory department, to achieve necessary approvals from regulatory bodies to distribute and make claims on the technology or product capabilities.
Ø Publication of data and findings as required.

Education/Experience:
4 year Degree (B.S.) in an Engineering discipline; six to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Ability:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
Math Ability:
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Manages approximately 6 employees in the Laboratory Services and Technology Departments. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
