Principal Scientist - Analytical Chemistry - (Job Number: 0803281) Description Ethicon, Inc., a member of Johnson && Johnson's Family of Companies, is recruiting for a Principal Scientist - Analytical Chemistry, located in Somerville, NJ. Ethicon, Inc.- Develops and markets products within three divisions: Ethicon Products Worldwide for wound closure and tissue repair; Johnson && Johnson Wound Management with biosurgical technologies to manage intra-operative bleeding and postoperative leaking, as well as advanced wound care products; and Ethicon Women's Health && Urology with minimally invasive gynecological and urological solutions in stress urinary incontinence, pelvic floor repair and uterine disorders. Provide technical support to multiple business units in the development of new medical devices. Develop analytical strategies to understand the fundamentals of how the medical device chemistry relates to product performance. From this understanding it is expected that new product ideas will be generated. Responsible for interacting with the business unit product development teams and the marketing group to differentiate Ethicon device chemistry from competitor's chemistry. Oversee the daily laboratory equipment operations and productivity. Evaluate processes and equipment for technology updates and serve as technical expert. Work actively with Engineers, Supervisors and Managers from all disciplines in resolving product quality issues, corrective actions and timely completion of these reports. Develop an interactive network with outside collaborators to increase the overall capability of the group. A minimum of a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, or Material Science with 3-5 years of related experience in the medical device industry is required. An expert background in x-ray diffraction techniques with complimentary bulk polymer characterization techniques (DSC, TGA DMA) is required. A good working knowledge of surface science techniques (XPS, TOF-SIMS, AFM) will be considered advantageous. Good communication and presentation skills must be evident through peer review publications and presentations at significant analytical conferences. Must be able to communicate detailed polymer characterization data to a diverse group of technical and non-technical associates involved in the product development process. Must be able to readily hyphenate analytical methods and/or build new measurement devices to solve problems. A detailed understanding of the product development process is preferred. Must be proficient with analysis software. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills are required. This position is located in Somerville, NJ.
