Principal Scientist Req. # 63304Position Description Medtronic CRDM is committed to fostering strong scientific relationships with physicians and external scientists via its External Research Program (ERP). ERP is a centrally based program that is accountable for discovering novel scientific concepts related to CRDM’s business interest.  This is accomplished by leveraging a strong network of Field Scientists who are located in territories around the United States.  Medtronic Field Scientists must develop high quality scientific relationships and research collaborations with physicians and external scientists who specialize in areas of Medtronic’s business interests.  Field Based scientists play a vital role by engaging Medtronic customers in scientific exchange and research collaboration so that vital information is transferred to and from internal organizational functions. This interaction builds strong intellectual relationships with customers and provides key information to Medtronic, assisting the decision making process for product, research, and strategic planning.  These relationships must lead to discovery of new knowledge and cutting edge research results that directly support Medtronic’s business initiatives. Position Responsibilities This position will be based in one of the following possible field locations depending on fit and need (West coast or Rocky Mountain region; MidAtlantic region or Southeast Region).  Locations will be considered on a case by case basis. Responsibilities are to work with physicians / scientists and discover innovative scientific concepts that are in alignment with Medtronic strategic initiatives. This may occur in the form of investigator initiated research, exchange of scientific information and messaging, and/or business development.  The field scientist will be accountable for building strong and meaningful scientific relationships with physicians/scientists by:  Disseminating and facilitating exchange of scientific data and concepts.  Collaborating to solve complex clinical/scientific problems.  Identifying novel scientific concepts that could create new therapies, improve existing therapies, prove substantial clinical value, or develop existing markets.  Supporting evaluation of investigator initiated research projects for scientific metric and alignment with CRDM’s strategic research initiatives.  Executing exemplary research with external investigators.  Demonstrating value to the CRDM business by integrating scientific concepts and data with internal stakeholders.Expectations: 1. Scientific Discovery  Effectively communicate current scientific knowledge to external stakeholders.  Identify important scientific evidence gaps that affect Medtronic therapies.  Builds strong intellectual relationships with external and internal stakeholders. Transfer key information to and from external physicians/scientist and internal Medtronic stakeholders.  Deliver proposals that provide ideas and methods to fill important knowledge gaps (investigator initiated research), and/or provide scientific ideas on new product uses, new markets for existing therapies and market development. 2. Scientific Analysis  Assure scientifically valid study design and protocol.  Analyze initial data to determine protocol and data collection effectiveness  Support interim and data analysis.  Integrate with internal stakeholders garnering marketing, product planning and research support.  Communicate data analysis results to key Medtronic stakeholders  Support data dissemination and integration  via investigator presentations (internal and external) and internal research  seminars  Support publication of data. 3. Management of Investigator-Initiated Research Projects: • Serve as a liaison between the external investigator and Medtronic for approximately 15-20 supported projects • Support Protocol and case report form development.   Oversee internal Project Execution including Regulatory and Legal assessments  Manage and overcome protocol barriers.  Assist in protocol modifications, adding centers, etc. to improve study executions.  Monitor project status including subject enrollment, interim reports, milestones, and final reports About 30-40% of time will be spent in travel within the region. Basic Qualifications • Graduate degree (doctorate preferred) in clinical or biological sciences, including biomedical engineering, physiology, epidemiology, etc. • Minimum of 3 years of combined clinical and research experience. • Documented experience and proficiency in clinical research (study design, data collection and analysis, manuscript development). • Scientific knowledge and expertise in cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology. • Experience in developing scientific relationships with physicians Desired/Preferred Qualifications • Doctoral  degree (PhD or equivalent) with specialization in cardiovascular sciences and/or doctoral degree in clinical sciences (MD, PharmD or equivalent) • Basic understanding of pacemaker, implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices and operation • Experience in reviewing, interpreting and presenting scientific information outside area of expertise • Previous experience with cardiovascular device technology • Demonstrated strength in scientific presentations • Possess a positive attitude, superior interpersonal skills and comfort level interacting closely with key physicians and external scientists. • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are required. • The ability to make customers central to all thinking and recognize/meet the diversity of customers and their needs and consistently drive customer satisfaction is required. • Must be self-directed and comfortable working independently (identifying and pursuing opportunities, prioritization, follow-through) under ongoing direction from manager.
