United Technologies Corporation, a Fortune top 50 company is a dynamic global corporation operating at the leading edge of commercial and military aviation, aerospace systems, climate control, elevator design, security and fire protection as well as hydrogen fuel cell development.

The United Technologies Research Center (UTRC), located in East Hartford, Connecticut, USA, invites qualified individuals to apply for several open positions in the area of systems control engineering.

UTRC is an internationally recognized R&D organization that conducts research across a broad range of technology areas to drive and support innovation in partnership with our business units. The business units of United Technologies Corporation (UTC) include Pratt & Whitney (aircraft engines and gas turbines for power generation), Sikorsky (helicopters), Otis (elevators), Carrier (heating, air conditioning, refrigeration), Hamilton-Sundstrand (aerospace products), UTC Power (fuel cell power plants for stationary & vehicle application, combined heat and power products), and UTC Fire and Security (building security systems). The mission of UTRC is to develop critical technologies to drive organic growth of UTC through innovation of new products and processes. UTC has established a corporate wide Controls Initiative to accelerate deployment of advanced control methodologies across UTC. The Controls Group at UTRC is growing to support this initiative and continues to develop its capability to conduct virtual product design by developing physics-based models of new UTC products, validating them in world class experimental facilities, using them to design control systems, and deploying controls in partnership with our businesses into a range of products. UTRC partners with the best research organizations in the world and provides an opportunity for collaboration among academic and business unit partners.

Technical expertise is sought in the areas of system-level modeling, multivariable control system analysis and design, algorithm design for systems exhibiting constraints, hybrid control systems, optimization-based and model predictive control, flight control, and real-time and distributed (networked) controller implementation. Applications currently under study include fuel cell power plants, building combined heat and power systems, variable capacity HVAC and refrigeration systems, high performance buildings and jet engines. Aerospace power distribution, helicopter flight control and energy efficient building energy systems represent growth opportunities.

Specific technical duties include development of control-oriented models, rigorous analysis of performance and robustness in multivariable and nonlinear systems, synthesis and analysis of process control systems, development and demonstration of model-predictive control systems, and rapid prototyping of control concepts in an experimental setting.

More generally, researchers at UTRC work within multidisciplinary teams that draw talent from UTRC, UTC business units, and in some cases government laboratories and academic institutions. Duties also include development of strategy for targeted application areas, proposal writing, and technical leadership of teams that draw membership from both UTRC and our business units.

A Ph.D in control or a related field and at least 5-7 years experience in either an academic or an industrial environment is essential.

A proven track record of developing successful proposals within business, academic or government organizations and externally to US funding agencies, in addition to supervising the technical work of others is essential.

A Ph.D in control or a related field and at least 5-7 years experience in either an academic or an industrial environment is essential.

A strong publication record and discernible leadership in professional societies such as the IEEE or ASME are also important qualifications.

The ideal candidate is self-starting, proactive and possesses strong leadership and interpersonal traits in addition to the technical skills listed above.

United Technologies Corporation is An Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
