Responsibilities:Reporting to the Director of Facilities Planning, the Principal Planner, Laboratories will be assigned space planning responsibilities for Genentech's Research and Development (R&D) Divisions. While primarily focused on SSF-based functions, the Principal Planner will also provide occasional laboratory planning expertise for projects at other sites including Vacaville, CA, Oceanside, CA, and Hillsboro, OR. The Principal Planner will primarily characterize the ongoing and future space needs for R&D functions currently occupying over 1.6 million square feet of Laboratory, Pilot Plant and related Offices for roughly 4,000 employees. There is an additional 250K SF of new Lab space in active planning and 500K SF in the early stages of project delivery. The Principal Planner must provide excellent facility planning services for both new construction and renovation projects. Project types will include biology and chemistry research laboratories, associated Vivarium facilities, Development Laboratories and Pilot Plants.The Principal Planner will focus primarily on the long-term facility needs for Drug Discovery including Early Discovery Research, Research Oncology, Immunology, Molecular Biology and Small Molecule Drug Discovery and Product Development including Development Science, Development Design and Analysis, Clinical Operations and Process R&D. To be effective, relationships must be developed and managed with key R&D customers across multiple levels and functions, ranging from Department Space Contacts to Senior VP's.With an eye for continuous improvement, the Senior Planner will measure current utilization and model demand/capacity studies for three, five and ten year scenarios. Capital Project Planning responsibilities include identifying and justifying future projects for the Capital Long-Range Plan, preparing Feasibility studies for Major Capital Projects, including comparative analysis of alternative solutions, risk analysis and project approval presentations to Senior Management. The Principal Planner will work with Project Management through Conceptual Design to assure program and design consistency with corporate and departmental needs. The Principal Planner will work with other internal Genentech groups such as EH&S and Compliance to identify project requirements. The Principal Planner will manage architects, cost estimators, real estate, traffic and other consultants, as required.The Principal Planner will have some space management responsibilities including working with individual departments to develop space allocation solutions that meet their functional workplace needs in a manner consistent with corporate standards. Requirements:The candidate must have a Bachelor's degree in Architecture; Master's degree preferred. MBA, or related business experience, is a plus. Minimum of 8-12 years of experience in the architectural/engineering industry with expertise in feasibility studies and conceptual design is required. This position requires a high degree of interpersonal skills and the ability to clearly communicate with all levels of the corporation and represent Genentech to outside consultants. The position requires proven problem-solving and exceptional analytical skills. The ability to think critically, make decisions and influence in a matrix organization is critical. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must.   The ideal candidate has served in a corporate environment in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry. Previous lab planning experience is highly preferred. General knowledge of capital project development methods and procedures is required. Knowledge of local consultants and industry standards is a plus. The candidate must have a high level of skills with PCs including Excel, Word and PowerPoint, and familiarity with AutoCAD and Archibus software.
