Ophthalmic Technician
Joslin Diabetes Center is an internationally recognized diabetes treatment, research and education institution affiliated with Harvard Medical School and headquartered in Boston, MA. Joslin is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for diabetes and improving the lives of people with diabetes through its cutting edge basic and clinical research, patient care programs for children and adults, and through programs and publications that improve the care of diabetes worldwide.
The Ophthalmic Technician for Joslin's Beetham Eye Institute will perform initial ocular examinations of patients prior to exam by ophthalmologist and visual acuity testing, refractions, slit lamp exam of the anterior segment and diagnostic testing as required clinically, or for clinical research trials.
The Ophthalmic Technician will be required to eventually perform visual field testing, ophthalmic photography and use the digital imaging system. (we are willing to train if the applicant does not already possess the skills to perform ocular coherence tomography, digital imaging or other selected skills).
Responsibilities: * Perform anterior segment exam and prepare patient for physician examination
* Obtain ocular and medical history, document appropriately in the patient electronic medical record
* Evaluate the patient’s visual function via refraction, Amsler grid, and contrast sensitivities.
* Perform Lensometry
* Perform slit-lamp examination and applanation tonometry
* Perform gross external examination of pupils and extraocular muscles.
* Determine and recommend further diagnostic testing when warranted and perform as ordered per ophthalmologist
Perform specialized ophthalmic tests such as:
* Hertel exophthalmometry
* Stereo vision testing (stereo fly)
* Visual field: Humphrey,
* Color Vision: H-R-R, Ishiara, D-15,
Assist with procedures:
* Prep for and assist if requested for minor procedures, ie. Lid lesion removal
* Laser Photocoagulation
Qualifications include:
-High School Education.
- Minimum of 2 years experience as an Ophthalmic Technician, or in a related field.
- Will be required to obtain JCAPHO certification at least to level of COA within 18 months of hire.
- Completion of 27 hours of CEU every three years.
- Will be required to work toward Clinical Trial Certification in refraction and acuity testing followed by ocular coherence tomography and ophthalmic photography.
