Managing Editor
Managing Editor Position
Description:
American Journal Experts (AJE) was founded in 2004 to help the international scientific research community overcome communication barriers to academic publication. American Journal Experts is a startup, and you have the opportunity to get involved at an early stage with outstanding growth potential. Find us online at www.journalexperts.com We are looking for a full time Managing Editor to help us manage our pool of highly-skilled graduate student editors. The ideal candidate is an intelligent, enthusiastic, hard working person with EXCELLENT writing skills and a desire to help the worldwide community of scholars. Responsibilities will include recruitment and training of new editors at prestigious US research universities, management of our pool of independent contractor editors, editing scientific and non-scientific research manuscripts, and implementation of new company initiatives. You will be exposed to all aspects of running and managing a small, but quickly growing company, so we are looking for flexibility, strong time management skills and an interest in entrepreneurship. A Ph.D. in a scientific field is preferred.
Advantages of working at AJE as a Managing Editor
AJE runs a paperless, virtual office and our employees work from home. This allows you to work anywhere you choose and to be flexible with your hours. AJE employees meet 1-2 times a week over lunches and as necessary, and communicate over the phone and e-mail. You will be exposed to the most cutting edge research being performed around the world. Your efforts will directly affect the impact of that research on the worldwide academic community. Thousands of researchers from over 150 different countries currently rely on AJE to help them publish their research. You will be exposed to new research articles every day – from molecular mechanisms of Alzheimers disease to the tourism industry in Romania. You will use your brain and your writing/editing skills every day. You will be training and managing 300+ very intelligent and capable PhD graduate students and post-docs from the most prestigious universities in the US. Our 12 current employees are young, bright, outgoing, and highly motivated and will share the load when necessary. You will work closely with our six other Managing Editors. You will be exposed the inner workings of a fast-paced, quickly-growing startup company and will have an important impact on day-to-day business decisions. Opportunity to travel occasionally to host recruitment sessions at top-tier US Universities.
Challenges involved in the Managing Editor position
Working at a startup is not a typical 9AM-5PM job. Some weeks will be busier than others and busy times may require as much as 60 hrs a week. Flexibility, time management, and availability are important to be successful. Work is required over the weekend, and days off are Tuesdays and Wednesdays (due to customer deadlines) For those who are not used to working independently, working from home rather than from a social office can be isolating. We try to foster a spirit of teamwork with AJE lunches, meetings, e-mails, and phone calls, but most of the time you will be on your own.
Compensation:
$35,000 + Company and Personal Performance Based Bonus (historically ~$8,000 per year)
