Lab Assistant II
Job Summary
The Lab Assistant II reports to a Laboratory Supervisor and may be assigned standard duties by either Lead California State CLS or California State CLS with the approval of the Supervisor. Incumbent functions as a part of the laboratory team by assisting in test set-up, preparation of reagents/media, and routine equipment maintenance. Ensures proper levels of department supplies, performs accurate record-keeping and provides general support of other department functions, as needed. Incumbents perform the same activities as Laboratory Assistant I but they have a broader understanding of laboratory operations and testing.

Job Accountabilities

The Lab Assistant II, depending on the department they work in, will perform all or part of the following duties:
1. Establishes cultures of bloods and bone marrows for chromosome analysis while under the direct and constant supervision of a California State CLS.
2. Harvests cultures and prepares slides for chromosome evaluation, under the direct and constant supervision of a California State CLS.
3. Logs, labels, and prepares specimens for testing.
4. Prepares and/or aliquots reagents and media using established formulas under controlled supervision of a California State CLS.
5. Performs routine housekeeping on all laboratory instruments and equipment.
6. Orders, unpacks, logs and stores supplies.
7. Types final reports to be reviewed and signed by Director.
8. Promptly and courteously answers phones, transfers or takes accurate messages. Maintains the confidentiality of client information.
9. Helps to ensure the laboratory area is neat and clean.
10. Uses and wears protective equipment and clothing as appropriate. Incumbent is responsible for becoming familiar with and following all laboratory safety procedures. Properly reports all incidents.
11. Maintains cooperative working relationships with co-workers.

Job Requirements

A.S. degree in Biological Science is a plus. One year of practical applications in a laboratory environment required.
