Histologist I/II
JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE: Responsible for proficiently performing and documenting histological testing, results, and procedures. Provides histology support for the Quality, R&D and Clinical Departments. Functions include all phases of tissue preparation, including fresh or in-process specimens, finished product for release and explanted specimens. Responsible for maintenance and operation of histology equipment. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Follow SOP's to proficiently perform Quality Control testing and inspection for product to be released for sale, as well as testing and evaluation of R&D and Clinical samples; 2. Coordinate project activities as assigned by the Lab Manager. 3. Specimen preparation, including rehydration, grossing, fixation, embedding, microtomy, and routine staining; 4. Preparation of reagents and solutions; 5. Assist in the training of new support staff in proper histology procedures and laboratory safety; 6. Operate standard laboratory/histology equipment (microtome, tissue processor, balances, microscope, etc.); 7. Train in the analysis and reporting of histological findings; 8. Be proficient in at least one additional specialized area of histology, i.e. special stains, immunohistochemistry, histology processing & embedding in plastics, decalcification & bone histology, and electron microscopy. 9. Ensure appropriate inventory of supplies and equipment; 10. Maintain appropriate database; 11. Support overall Quality System of LifeCell. QUALIFICATIONS: MINIMUM EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree; eligible for certification in Histology or specialty. MINIMUM SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: Extensive Lab Experience Laboratory & chemical safety, Blood Borne Pathogens training. Basic data entry. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills EQUIPMENT USED: Various histology and laboratory equipment (i.e. tissue processor, microtome, balance, pH meter, microscope), and computer. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Majority of work performed in a laboratory setting. Must be willing to work with potentially biohazardous materials including human and laboratory animal tissue. COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written with all levels of diverse cultures. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Basic mechanical skills, lifting up to 20 lbs. Good visual skills. Good manual dexterity and eye-to-hand coordination. MENTAL/APTITUDE REQUIREMENTS: Ability to organize and prioritize tasks. Ability to follow SOP's and Work Instructions with great attention to detail. Good math skills, aptitude for analysis.
