Cytogenetic Technologist

JOB SUMMARY:  This individual, under the supervision of the FISH Laboratory Supervisor, will assist with FISH preparation, analysis and interpretation, when necessary, to maintain appropriate specimen turn-around-times.  In addition should posess a strong background in all phases of FISH and cytogenetic oncology analysis and techniques. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Perform specialized Cytogenetics/FISH procedures that lead to the formation of an accurate diagnostic report.Conducting fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques & using image analysis.Performing Cytogenetic Lab procedures, tissue culture & microscopic analysis

Requires the ability to work independently and makes decisions, speak clearly, read and write in English, manual dexterity, bend, reach, stoop, lift up to 25 pounds, sit for long periods, ability to coordinate information and activities, ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously, perform mathematical calculations, ability to function in a fast paced environment, meet critical deadlines, customer service oriented, and projects a positive interaction with outside agencies.

 

EQUIPMENT USED:

Computer, FISH imaging equipment (ASI), fluorescence microscope, laser printer, scanner, copy machine, calculator, telephone, fax machine, general office and specialized software, general office equipment, palm pilot, digital camera or other specialized equipment for research activities.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: This individual must have a B.S. in Medical Cytogenetics Technology, Medical Technology, Biology or an appropriately related scientific discipline.  NCA certification as a clinical laboratory specialist in cytogenetics (CLSp(CG) strongly preferred.  At least 2yrs experience in a Cytogenetics Lab, Experience conducting fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques and using image analysis is a must.  Proficiency in Cytogenetic Lab procedures, tissue culture & microscopic analysis.
