The Role:

The purpose of the role of Software Support Engineer is to support the efforts of the Software Engineering team, which means that the projects and tasks will be ever-changing, based on the current needs of the team.  The following is a short list of the some of projects and primary responsibilities that the person hired for this role will immediately tackle.  This list represents the nature of the types of tasks/projects the Software Support Engineer will be responsible for.

 

· Develop improvements for the software build process used for creating and deploying releases.  Includes hands-on development, as well as implementing automation for the deployment.

· Implement improvements to the configuration management process.  Involves researching standard practices, advising on ways to modify or streamline the existing process, and implementing changes to provide for ease in review of code changes and management of file changes.

· Develop and maintain automation tools for software engineering and QA environments.  Integrate QA Automation Test Scripts into the software builds.  This may involve researching and installing existing vendor solutions or developing an internal solution.

· Implement a solution to monitor that Cruise Control is running and to provide automated notification to the Software Engineering team when it’s not running.

· Develop and implement a solution to automatically recompile stored procedures on a scheduled basis.

· Develop and implement production log visualization to provide the Software Engineering team with real-time awareness of the state of the software.

· Manage the configuration and setup of Apache, JBoss, etc.

· Perform security scans of application software.  Nessus experience a plus.

· Manage the configuration of systems and software that support software engineering efforts, such as Bugzilla, CVS, Cruise Control, etc.

· Develop and document internal applications as needed by the Software Engineering team.

· Support Software Engineering and QA teams by assisting in writing of shell and batch scripts.

· Perform Oracle database refreshes for Software Engineering team members.

 

Requirements:

· Motivated, smart and hardworking personality, with or without substantial experience.

· BS in Computer Science or equivalent a plus.

· 2+ years software engineering experience a plus.

· Experience with application servers is a plus.  Experience with JBoss and tomcat is preferred.

· Must have experience working with java applications.  Experience with web-based applications preferred.

· Must have experience with databases. Oracle is preferred.

· Experience building Java with Ant is preferred.

· Experience with JUnit is a plus.

· Must have proficiency in scripting in Perl, Python, php or shell script. 

· Must have experience working in Linux or Unix (Linux preferred).

· Must have experience with configuration management & change control process. CVS experience is preferred.

· Experience in integrating test suites with software builds and a knowledge of build automation tools, such as Cruise Control, is preferred.

· Must be a self starter who can take a set of requirements and produce the desired outcome with limited daily supervision and direction.

· Must be adaptable and able to work in a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple tasks at a time.

· Must have excellent oral and written communication and teamwork skills.

· Must demonstrate effective communication and initiative in working closely with multiple teams.
