Loss Reserve Analyst I

This is the entry level Loss Reserve Analyst position responsible for loss reserving and other actuarial analyses, with most of the focus on reserve reviews. Reviews historical development of losses and loss adjustment expenses (LAE) and recommends reserve changes. May review historical policy retention and report policy life expectancy. Interacts with product management, pricing, claims and finance functions. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Analyzes loss and LAE data including: - Accurately downloading data into Excel models - Making reasonable judgments regarding future development of losses and LAE by: o Analyzing the historical data by segment o Understanding changes in underwriting and claims handling of the segment o Understanding relationships between parameters o Testing accuracy of prior selections - Accurately uploading reserve changes into production - Communicating results of review with product management, pricing and claims - Interacting with loss reserving team in the process Develops an understanding of insurance, loss reserving, and actuarial topics by: - Researching relevant educational material - Interacting with others in the company Completes other projects relating to development and maintenance of actuarial/financial models. This list of projects is not all-inclusive, but may include any of the following: - Analyzing and reporting policy retention - Analyzing various parameters of reserve development - Supporting reinsurance programs - Making enhancements to models and processes - Creating loss simulation models KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: - Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Finance, or related technical or business field and typically 0-2 years experience - Strong mathematical, analytical and organizational skills with detail orientation - Excellent written and verbal communication skills - Ability to learn quickly and apply advanced problem solving skills - Ability to work well in a team environment with individuals at all levels of the organization - Intermediate grasp of technical/specialty skills (e.g., actuarial, personal computing, mainframe, etc.) - Proficient with Excel including macros, and data extraction tools including SAS At Progressive, status quo won't cut it.
