Position: Hybrid Vehicle Battery Engineer
Reporting To: Manager of Electronics Engineering
Job Purpose: Oversee and guide the specification, development, integration, supplier development, and validation of advanced batteries and other energy storage systems for vehicle usage.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
· Understand/develop/optimize advanced battery system requirements for vehicle applications, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles
· Write specifications for battery systems, including battery management controls
· Write test specifications for battery systems at the module and vehicle level
· Write battery system validation requirements; oversee validation activities
· Evaluate technologies and suppliers and make sourcing recommendations
· Perform vehicle system analysis to determine energy storage system requirements
· Perform energy budget assessment using computer modeling analysis tools
· Provide technical direction for mechanical packaging and battery thermal management (cooling) requirements
· Perform system FMEA for battery systems and interactions with other vehicle systems.
· Coordinate development actions with Project Management, Engineering & outside partners.
· Requires ability to lead a development team from concept to production
· Ability to document work and present it to others including senior management and customers.
· Provide technical liaison between engineering and marketing, as well as outside partners and advanced battery suppliers
· Current, up-to-date knowledge of the state-of-the-art in the industry for advanced battery systems, ultra capacitors, and other energy storage and delivery systems primarily for vehicle applications
· Provide input to planning and budget activities
· Proposal generation

Education and/or Experience Required:
BSEE, ME, ChemE, Materials Science, or equivalent
5 years minimum specifying, developing, and testing advanced battery modules/packs for vehicle usage
Knowledge of IC Engine Operation Principles
Extensive Knowledge of Vehicle Propulsion Energy Requirements
Extensive knowledge of hybrid and fuel cell vehicle battery system requirements
Preferred Experience: MS or PhD, EE, ME, ChemE, Materials Science, or equivalent
Experience with battery management electronic controls
Experience in defining battery management control algorithms
Analysis using Matlab/Simulink to model vehicle systems
Physical Job Requirements:
4 to 8 weeks traveling per year.
