Reporting To:  Manager of Electronics Engineering

 

Job Purpose:  Oversee and guide the specification, development, integration, supplier development, and validation of low and high voltage power electric components for hybrid vehicle usage, including energy storage subsystems.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

·  Understand/develop/optimize the power electrical requirements for hybrid vehicle applications, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all electric vehicles.

·  Perform vehicle system analysis to determine energy storage and electrical system requirements.

·  Evaluate technologies and suppliers, writing specifications for all energy storage and electrical power components.

·  Create testing/validation specifications at the component and vehicle levels, support and oversee test and validation activities.

·  Provide technical input for mechanical packaging and thermal management (cooling) requirements.

·  Perform sub-system Design FMEA including interactions with other vehicle systems.

·  Electrical power drive systems will include energy storage (traction batteries, supercapacitors, etc), motors, generators, DC/DC and DC/AC converters and inverters.

·  Responsible for creation of electrical schematics to capture bus distribution and layout including both high voltage (300-600VDC) and low voltage (5-28VDC) devices.

·  Specify low and high power conductor/cabling requirements and routing, including shielding requirements for EMC.

·  Coordinate development actions with Project Management, Engineering & outside partners.

·  Lead as design release engineer the development team from concept to production.

·  Ability to document work and present it to others including senior management and customers.

·  Provide technical liaison between engineering and marketing, as well as outside partners and advanced battery suppliers

·  Current, up-to-date sub-system level knowledge and experience of advanced battery systems and other energy storage components, as well as the high voltage power electrical components primarily for vehicle applications.

·  Provide input to planning and budget activities

·  Proposal generation

 

The duties and responsibilities of position may change as need arises.  The employee will be notified of the change.  Relevant work experience may also be substituted for education or certification, at company’s discretion.

 

 

Education and/or Experience: 

Required: BSEE

2 years minimum specifying, and leading the developing and testing of high voltage power electrical components for vehicle usage.

Very familiar with the creation and/or use of automotive standards and documentation, including DFMEAs and test/validation plans.

Familiar with electrical schematic entry software. 

 

Preferred:  MS or PhD, EE.

  Direct experience with EMC development and testing.

Experience with 3D electrical routing CAD (e.g. UG NX)

Analysis using Matlab/Simulink to model vehicle systems

 

 

Physical Job Requirements:

  4 to 8 weeks traveling per year.
