The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company currently has an opening for a Senior Physics Engineer at it's headquarters in Akron, OH.

Department Description:
The Tire and Material Physics department is responsible for developing fundamental understanding of tire characteristics and performance, developing new methods to study the mechanical and thermal response of tires and tire components, evaluating tire-pavement interactions and for relating design and material characteristics to product performance through experimental techniques and computational approaches.

Job Description:
This position will be responsible for developing fundamental understanding of tire-pavement interaction, and conducting research of related physical phenomena: mechanics of tire contact with rough surfaces, physics of friction, slippage and wear, aiming to improve tire characteristics and performance. The responsibilities also include developing new (experimental, numerical and analytical) methods instrumental in studying tire-pavement contact.


Required:
- MS or higher level degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field with emphasis on applied (experimental and / or computational) mechanics.
- Ability to identify core issues and assemble appropriate technology to provide innovative and timely solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in the team settings; effectively interact with other professionals in order to identify issues and to transfer technology is essential.


Preferred:
Preference will be given to a candidate possessing combination of several skills as follows:
- Experience with surface physics and contact mechanics (experimental and/or computational) are highly desirable. Knowledge of analytical / numerical methods of surface texture modeling.
- Experience with non-linear (i.e. finite strain) mechanics, physics of composites and life prediction methods are desirable. Hands-on skills in numerical (finite elements) methods related to fracture mechanics (cohesive elements) or equivalent methods in multi-phase fluid/thermal modeling.
- Hands-on experience with experimental techniques to characterize materials at small scales (optical / microscopic techniques, SEM, TEM, nanoindentation). At least one year experience in industrial environment (post graduation) with sensors and experimental stress analysis is preferred.
- Knowledge of viscoelasticity and hysteretic phenomena (thermal, material and interface aspects).
