Telescope Operator
Manpower Professional is currently recruiting for a Telescope Operator. This contract position is expected to last a minimum of one year and is located in Socorro, NM, at a prestigious space exploration research facility specializing in earth/asteroid collisions. Qualified candidates must be a US Citizen and be able to qualify for a security clearance.This individual will analyze and post data to the Minor Planet Center from the previous night's observing; prepare the telescopes, domes and cameras for night-time observing; monitor their status; operate the telescopes and domes while acquiring data; maintain logs; monitor and adjust the telescopes; and assist engineers in resolving technical problems. A background in astronomy or astrophysics is desired as is the ability and interest to contribute in one or more of the following areas: documentation (writing and maintaining observer's manuals), database design and maintenance, program development (C, C++, IDL), web page design and maintenance, scripting (java, python, Perl), system architecture, system administration. This is a variable shift position that includes nights, weekends and holidays. Must be willing and able to climb stairs within dome to remove or install the cover on a meter-class telescope. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance within a reasonable period of time.
