Safety Engineer

 Job Purpose

 

To provide technical leadership in the design, development and implementation of environmental, health or safety processes and programs in support of GKN Aerospace Services and in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. To support manufacturing and facility operations with essential environmental, health and safety functions and participate in establishing business strategies.

 Principal Accountabilities

 

1)  Evaluate workplace/employee and environmental exposures to hazardous and physical agents by using technical knowledge and monitoring equipment.

 

2)  Conduct pre-design safety or environmental reviews of equipment/facility/new processes to optimize work environment conditions.

 

3)  Assess current GKN EHS program and practices and develop compliance solutions and best practices for high priority deficiencies.

 

4)  Inspect and audit equipment, environment, building and grounds, and employee operations to ensure OSHA compliance and best practice improvements.

 

5)  Respond to EHS emergency situations and develop/improve hazardous materials response capability.

 

6)  Provide support to the Metals, Composites, and Facilities Env’l Safety Committees.

 

7)  Conduct and lead serious incident/accident investigations, provide investigation training for plant supervision and safety committee teams.

 

8)  Support GKN-STL culture shift toward full integration of ESH into business unit ownership.  Support and enhance the values contributing to a positive GKN business environment.

 

9)  Through inspections and audits, assure the maintenance of accurate records and permits required by local, state and Federal regulations relative to environment, health or safety. 

 

10)  Maintain required Shared Service Agreements (e.g., Wastewater).

 

11)  Coordinate, supervise and assure regulatory compliance by contracted personnel and services.

 

12)  Provide advice and consultation for production and facilities on environmental, health and safety issues.

 

13)  Revise/maintain policies and procedures to support processes for all regulatory requirements.

 

14)  Develop and provide key training programs for GKN employees.

 

15)  Serve as point of contact for regulatory inspection, insurance visits, and external audits.  Respond to regulatory agencies, auditors, etc. on complex subject matter. 

 

16)  Maintain a working knowledge of applicable safety, industrial hygiene and environmental regulations through professional associations, technical and government agency publications, workshops and seminars.  Expand expertise to provide assistance for environmental or safety programs and issues. Participate in cross-location & cross-division initiatives.

 

 Education

 

BS in Safety or Environmental Engineering or related discipline required.  Graduate level degree preferred. Experience and Qualifications

 

Seven to ten years of safety engineering in a manufacturing environment required. Proven ability to interact with a variety of professions and disciplines in a facilitation role.  Good oral and written presentation skills with demonstrated leadership capabilities.  Strong computer skills needed.  Highly competent in either Environmental or Safety Engineering; good working knowledge of both areas.  General knowledge of HAZWOPER, Lead and Asbestos regulations.  Emergency First Aid and CPR/First Responder qualifications desired.  Professional certifications such as CSP or CIH strongly preferred.  Working competence with federal, state and local regulations.
